Due to the rapid growth of the bank, a new role has opened up in Risk Management Function to support and drive the development of risk data and analytics capability across the risk management teams.
This role will be responsible for supporting the risk team with their ever-expanding data requirements. Those in the role will be expected to translate risk requirements into queries and produce analyses, datasets and reports housed within Starling’s data warehouse.
Responsibilities
Specifically, the requirements that the role holder is expected to support include:
- Data sourcing, manipulation, cleansing and datasets creation;
- Data transformation and visualisation including analysis, interrogation and interpretation of data patterns and trends;
- Data analysis, interpreting and reporting clearly and concisely on the results of this analysis;
- Creation of standardised data queries to allow customisation of reports;
- Creation of regular datasets and reports that are used for ongoing risk assessment or regulatory submissions;
- Historisation and maintenance of those reports so that they take account of Starling’s ever changing data landscape;
- Development of ad-hoc queries required for risk investigations;
- Documentation of all risk data requirements including status of completeness and working with the first line business to meet those requirements.
- Identifying and gathering the data requirement with the relevant risk subject matter expert;
- Identifying all the relevant pieces of data items including key attributes that are required to fulfil that request within the Starling data warehouse, liaising with the data team as necessary;
- Building a risk data model and associated queries to allow data interrogation and datasets creation for further analysis or reporting.
- Building a query that creates a dataset that meets the requirements, and work with the business to persisting that if it is for a regular report
- Confirming that the data represents what it is supposed to represent using tests spot checks, and other techniques
- Iterating over this process until the requirement is met
- Ensuring that the datasets are properly documented, with definitions given to each of the elements within it.
The successful candidate should have the following skills and experience:
- Technical background in data analytics, statistics or similar discipline and/or may have experience in quantitative financial analysis;
- Ability to analyse, interrogate, manipulate and interpret data patterns and trends;
- Experience with statistical analysis or data manipulation packages such as SQL and Python are essential;
- Previous experience with business intelligence solutions and big data analytics platforms such as Looker is desirable;
- Good understanding risk data requirements across a wide variety of risk functions, including credit, financial, capital, liquidity, operations, and financial crime.
- Ability to translate risk business requirements into queries that can be run in the data warehouse;
- Good understanding of a bank's balance sheet and P&L and credit and financial risk data requirements;
- Ability to handle requests from multiple different sources and prioritising them appropriately;
- Good understanding of data regulations (such as GDPR) and associated good practice in the handling of data;
- Excellent communication and report-writing skills with the ability to liaising and engage with various stakeholders who maintain or have requirements of data (2nd line of defence risk team, data engineering, etc.)
