Job description

The BBC World Service, which is BBC News' international news arm, is looking for an exceptional candidate to join its Audiences team as a Senior Research Executive.

The BBC World Service delivers news in English and 41 other languages to hundreds of millions around the world each week on digital, TV and audio platforms.

Reporting to the Head of Audience Insight, BBC World Service, the post holder will supervise and support large scale audience research projects directly informing strategic investments and commissioning. As well as research, the post holder will conduct data analysis on existing survey and digital data to inform key business decisions and support business growth and impact.

Central to this role will be working on the BBC’s Global Audience Measure (GAM), which measures the BBC’s weekly audience and impact each year, in most countries around the world, and involves building a single customer view of the business through merging multiple data sources, and methodologies. The Global Audience Measure is a key measure of the BBC’s performance and impact globally. Upon publication each year, it is presented to all BBC staff, and debriefed with senior leadership at all levels, to inform future, and long-term business decisions. You will be involved in all stages of the project, from commissioning and survey design to overseeing fieldwork (this can involve travel), analysing data, and debriefing to leadership.

This role will have a heavy focus on quantitative research, and on methodologies used in remote and less digital markets (CAPI, CATI, etc). The role also requires familiarity with qualitative and digital analytics techniques, and a good repertoire of analysis and strategic thinking skills.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Managing tasks throughout an entire audience research project lifecycle, from commissioning and project managing agencies, to developing instruments, designing sampling plans, performing analysis and presenting findings. You will have the ability to move between multiple projects in a given day or week.
  • Analysing data from current and previous research projects, from digital analytics, and external data sources, to answer business questions. You will have the ability to analyse large sample (1000+) datasets and tell meaningful stories with them. Experience working with digital analytics tools will be beneficial.
  • Communicating insights and what they mean in terms of editorial, product, and business decisions to stakeholders at all levels. You will have the ability to listen, understand people’s needs, and influence decisions.
  • Collaborating effectively with the rest of the Audiences team. You will be leading on as well as supporting others on projects and thus will be a team player and a great communicator.

Are you the right candidate:

  • You will have deep knowledge of quantitative research methodologies and experience with doing/commissioning quantitative research – especially of face to face and phone interviewing.
  • Experience of “media industry standard” audience measurement approaches is beneficial
  • You will have a proven record of managing projects which have had a demonstrable impact on an organisation.
  • You will demonstrate the ability to synthesise data/ insights from different sources and arrive at strategic recommendations
  • You will have great communication skills and ability to work with the rest of the World Service Audience Insight team. You will be both a leader, who has the ability to work independently, and a team player
  • You will have a keen interest and appreciation of the cultures, peoples, and current affairs of other countries/ markets. Ideally you will have an interest in international news and knowledge of global media and news audiences.

We’re happy to discuss flexible working. Please indicate your choice under the flexible working question in the application._ There is no obligation to raise this at the application stage but if you wish to do so, you are welcome to. Flexible working will be part of the discussion at offer stage._
