Senior Radiation Protection Engineer


Purpose and Scope:

To provide expert oversight of projects and frequent technical advice to enable delivery of work whilst maintaining compliance with relevant legislation and both company and client standards. To ensure adequate RP support to the design and planning of work and the review of products, technology and processes, including the optimisation of Radiological Protection arrangements. To provide RP support and oversight of practical delivery of operational decommissioning work. Where required, support Strategic Business Units in the assessment of and bidding for new business.

Essential Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Head of Profession for RP, the essential responsibilities of the RP Engineer are as follows:

  • To manage project RP work in such a way as to enable the delivery of work in complex environments, removing unnecessary obstacles to delivery whilst maintaining robust compliance with regards to relevant Ionising Radiations legislation and policies.
  • To develop and manage the execution of detailed radiological protection programmes in support of projects, driving to optimise radiological conditions and exposures, seeking to implement improved ways of working where reasonably practicable.
  • To influence, and manage the impacts of, decision making with regards to licence condition compliance arrangements, most notably for modifications under LC22.
  • Provide expert advice on Radiological Protection matters, ensure compliance with Ionising Radiation Regulations and any mandatory company and/or client policies on sites.
  • Be certified as an RPA and maintain that certification for the duration of employment.
  • Take a responsible senior leadership role within the Radiological Protection team, acting as the responsible person for Radiological Protection on programmes of work.
  • Advise on the appropriate aspects in the development of Detailed Volumes in the construction of programmes.
  • Influencing the development of Project Execution Plans to ensure a fit-for-purpose approach is taken to each project.
  • Seeking out and/or sponsoring potential innovations to projects and advising project teams and/or clients of lean delivery options.
  • Directing and supporting Graduate Trainees, Assistant RP Engineers and RP Engineers as required, including to meet project aims and their personal development targets.
  • Developing and overseeing Radiological Protection arrangements for projects, including documentation such as, Radiological Risk Assessments, Radiological Design Documents, Critical Examinations, Dose Estimates, Local Rules, Contingency Plans and Investigation Reports.
  • Seeking improvements to the quality of relevant monitoring data in terms of capture, storage, ease of access, reading and comprehension.
  • Ensuring the systematic review of radiological monitoring data for operational packages of work.
  • Manage inspectors and regulators during audits and investigations as required.
  • Support Best Available Technique assessments and other optioning processes.
  • Advise on radioactive waste aspects of projects as required with support from other specialists, if necessary.
  • Work with projects and clients to help solve complex and challenging problems while maintaining excellent relationships with our customers and suppliers.
  • Support colleague’s learning and development through development of training packages, training delivery and the sharing of knowledge and experience.
  • Undertake line management responsibilities for RP Engineers and Assistant RP Engineers and RP Managers.
  • Take accountability for the standard of their own work, the work of all junior RP project staff and any direct reports through the line management chain, taking direction from the Head of Profession for RP as required.
  • Help develop and implement effective deployment of company-wide policies, processes, systems and procedures ensuring that at all times the business remains compliant.
  • Where required, support the business development tasks of Strategic Business Units by providing input to assessments and bids for work appropriate to the role and individual experience.
  • Perform all other similar related duties as assigned or requested by the Head of Profession for RP.

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

Educated to NQF Level 6 (Batchelors Degree or equivalent) in a scientific or engineering related discipline, or demonstrable equivalent capability supported by significant experience.

A demonstrable expert level understanding of Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 compliance is essential.

Significant experience within Radiological Protection is essential.

Certification as a Radiation Protection Adviser is required; an advance draft of a portfolio close to being submitted may be considered.

The ability to meet deadlines is essential.

The ability to manage a workload with minimal levels of supervision is essential.

Experience of management of technical teams is highly desirable.

A thorough knowledge of the Environmental Permitting Regulations / Radioactive Substance Act is highly desirable.

Being a member of a relevant professional institute is highly desirable, and would be expected during employment.

A reasonable level of commercial awareness is desirable, such as knowledge of contract types, market availability of relevant products and services etc.

This role requires a high level of initiative. Regarding work, Senior RP Engineers are expected to anticipate issues or needs, identify solutions, act to implement solutions and report back regularly.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

Required to enter radiologically controlled areas, including high hazard areas in which significant protective equipment must be worn. The successful applicant will be required to pass medical assessments to enable the wearing of protective equipment and possibly to be designated as a Classified Person under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017. The successful applicant will be willing and able to make appropriate challenge to prevent or stop work which is unsafe and or non-compliant.

Work Location

Flexible working is encouraged for this post, significant work may be performed remotely. Due to the knowledge and site experience required to be successful, it is expected that significant amount of site familiarisation work would be required, at least in the early part of employment.
