About Climate Group

Climate Group is an Equal Opportunities Employer. We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion, ensuring that everyone in our team has the opportunity to thrive and excel. We welcome and encourage job applications from people of all backgrounds.

Climate Group drives climate action. Fast. Our goal is a world of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, with greater prosperity for all.

We focus on systems with the highest emissions and where our networks have the greatest opportunity to drive change. We do this by building large and influential networks and holding organisations accountable, turning their commitments into action.

We share what we achieve together to show more organisations what they could do. We are an international non-profit organisation, founded in 2004, with offices in London, Amsterdam, Beijing, New Delhi and New York.

About the role

This is a highly campaign focused role allowing us to maximise the value of new funding. Youll be a central part of the team, working with our Head of Industry to build and deliver advocacy results, including on the global steel sector. Your role will involve building an international public affairs and policy influencing programme of work for the industry sector, with a major focus on leading the international agenda on clean steel to start. What we want to achieve will involve highly public moments, with external PR while leveraging stakeholder participation and behind the scenes relationships to build true influence and achieve real change. This will need to be underpinned by building gravitas and thought leadership for the medium to long term too. In future, the brief will likely broaden to also work with our other flagship project of ConcreteZero which is setting an important global standard for emissions from the buildings and infrastructure.

This role requires an ability to combine your strong skills in public affairs with a capability to influentially shape, position and advocate for policy. It also required a good understanding of how to build integrated campaigns of work involving communications as well. Though strong experience of public affairs is essential, we are flexible in considering those with different mixes of these areas of expertise.

Leading candidates will demonstrate experience relevant to the above, combined with evidence of leading focused programmes of engagement and influencing with governments and/or business and other stakeholders who influence global regulations and standards. They will be adept at building critical relationships either directly or through senior representatives and partners and then leveraging those relationships to secure change.

Key responsibilities
  • Lead on the development and delivery of the specific steel related workstreams, ensuring that these align with the overall Industry communications strategy.
  • Build and deliver a major international campaign, integrating public affairs, comms and policy, to deliver our external affairs objectives.
  • Incorporate and project manage the wider capacity, support and senior leadership resources of wider teams in the campaign.
  • Converting our fundamental policy positions into strong advocacy and leadership positions and then representing those in key markets with key stakeholders.
  • Help to project manage and drive the development of future policy positions and thought leadership for our industry work.
  • Drive stakeholder and external engagement by establishing critical relationships with global organisations directly and in support of the profile of our Head of Industry.
  • Helping all our campaigns to build critical international partnerships to extend our reach into our target territories.
  • Unlock positive and supportive action from stakeholders through building and deploying an advocacy network e.g. aligned national and regional governments.
  • Identify topical issues and trends on steel decarbonisation and feed these into strategic and tactical campaign activities.
  • Build internal knowledge for what is happening in the industrial sector in our key markets, to shape strategies for enhanced profile and engagement.
  • Provide sound advice and contribute to strategies across the industry work and the development of future proposals.

About you

Essential:

  • Experience of developing, implementing and advising on public affairs strategies and channels.
  • Effective policy influencing skills, positioning, developing, writing and advocating.
  • Excellent understanding of integrated communications campaigns and the disciplines involved.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of working with businesses.
  • Ability to engage critical stakeholders in highly technical content that enables effective engagement/advocacy.
  • An inspiring team player with the ability to identify where support is needed and comfortable in managing a good plan alongside more strategic activities.
  • Strong judgement, good analytical skills and able to present clear arguments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications for a variety of communications channels.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across a range of cultural contexts and leadership teams.
  • Proactive and able to work independently and unsupervised to deliver tasks and achieve project objectives.

Desirable:

  • Experience working internationally in these fields.
  • Experience in the industrial, manufacturing or other technical and regulated sectors such as pharma or finance.
