You will be joining our growing team of nature-based solutions practitioners as part of our exciting and inclusive Environment practice, and the role will sit within our Water Management Consultancy business. We use state of the art approaches and our innovative in-house tools to assess and quantify the impact of environmental changes at various scales, from strategic to scheme level. Many of our clients are highly ambitious about tackling the climate and biodiversity crises, with recent projects focusing on using nature-based solutions to deliver carbon net zero and introducing beavers as part of natural flood management on a rural estate. You will have the opportunity to work with and influence our clients directly, supporting them on tackling these challenges.
Responsibilities
You will play a central role in developing, contributing to and leading projects with a nature-based solutions focus helping our clients to deliver emissions reductions and removals to deliver climate outcomes such as Net Zero objectives. There will also be the opportunity to support on natural capital, biodiversity net gain and natural flood management on a wide variety of projects across the business. You will need to keep up-to-date with the rapidly developing field of nature-based solutions and the application of evolving industry techniques around quantification and verification of greenhouse gas emissions reductions and removals. Through our technical networks, you will also have the opportunity to input to the development and refinement of new and existing digital tools that quantify and illustrate environmental impacts in a clear and visual way. You will also contribute to business development and will be responsible for the successful delivery of key tasks on projects or on bids, including managing contributions from junior team members, and will be focused on achieving and delivering technical excellence.
What we’re looking for
We are seeking an enthusiastic and ambitious individual to join our team, contributing to a wide range of projects across the Environment business, including in nature-based carbon removals, habitat restoration, water management, catchment management, climate adaptation, natural flood management, environmental planning, and designing future-ready cities. You will have the opportunity to work alongside award-winning national experts in environmental economics, biodiversity net gain and nature-based solutions. Our current vacancy is for a Senior or Principal Consultant position in Epsom, Bristol, Peterborough, Oxford, Warrington, London, Glasgow or Birmingham, although consideration will be given to exceptional candidates in other locations. The role will also involve leading the technical network on Nature and Carbon drawing together specialisms and sharing technical knowledge across the business.
The Individual
You will be an Environmental Scientist/Biologist or Ecologist, preferably chartered (or willing to work towards it), who has demonstrable experience developing nature-based solutions and quantification of carbon impacts and benefits through either a combination of academic training or on-the-job experience. Some experience of multi-disciplinary project delivery is desirable, as nature-based solutions will often be an input into a wider project or require inputs from different experts.
You will be self-motivated, flexible and enthusiastic, as well as having:
- Ideally some experience in project management, winning work and technical leadership of projects.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to adapt your presentation style to different types of audience, including non-specialists.
- Strong organisational skills, an ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and to deadlines.
- Excellent collaborative working skills to ensure we get the best from our working relationships with internal and external client teams
- Attention to detail and desire to work to high standards consistently
- Have detailed knowledge of greenhouse gas quantification methodologies, standards and tools in the context of nature-based solutions, understand implications of soils in context of nature based-carbon removals and land use change, and environmental impacts of infrastructure projects.
- Awareness of relevant existing and emerging policies (both in UK and internationally), statutory procedures and regulations including environmental law, statutes, regulations and evolving nature-based carbon standards relating to infrastructure and nature-based projects, as well as the carbon offsetting market.
- Have a good technical understanding of GIS and Information and Data Management and the importance of the role of data management in providing a platform to deliver and maximise nature-based solution opportunities.

Training
