Job description

The role and our team

Do you want to deliver critical policies to deliver a secure, decarbonised electricity system?

We are hiring one SEO to join the Electricity Security and Market Evolution Team. You will take a leading role in developing our main mechanism for security of supply - the Capacity Market – so that we can decarbonise our electricity system whilst keeping the lights on. You will also have the opportunity to work on live and emerging security of supply risks, and to engage on electricity security policy across Whitehall and industry.

We are a friendly team and work collaboratively with other BEIS teams, industry, and academia to make a positive contribution to UK energy policy. We believe in building an inclusive environment where everyone is encouraged to take up opportunities for development. We encourage applications from those who work part-time, job-share or have other flexible working arrangements.

Person specification

Key responsibilities

We are committed to providing a secure and reliable electricity supply which is crucial to GB consumers.

The amount electricity generated from renewable sources is growing rapidly in the UK, such as solar and wind power. At the same time older, more traditional fossil fuel power generation is coming to the end of its operational life. To support this transition we need to find solutions to the new challenges this will present to keeping the system secure.

This role is right at the heart of Government's decision making on the future of the electricity system.

The focus of the role is on recommending how much electricity capacity to buy through the multi-billion pound Capacity Market auctions – so consumers have the electricity they need when they need it.

You will collaborate with partners across industry including National Grid, Ofgem, electricity generators and demand side response providers, and a panel of specialists from industry and academia. Along with the specialists you will help scrutinise the modelling work carried out by National Grid so that we secure the capacity we need. The role will also contribute to the team’s wider work to align the Capacity Market with power sector decarbonisation targets, and our ambition for a low carbon energy system.

Responsibilities are likely to include:

  • The timely delivery of the annual process to recommend and set the targets for Capacity Market auctions.

  • Supporting our wider policy work to ensure the Capacity Market continues to be fit for purpose.

  • Supporting the team in tackling emerging energy security challenges, monitoring wholesale energy markets and identifying links with policy work, and keeping up to date with developments in the electricity sector and wider energy policy.

  • Engaging teams across BEIS to ensure the Capacity Market's alignment with other policy areas.

Skills and experience

We're keen to hear from you if you:

  • Are a confident communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills who enjoys engaging with a wide range of stakeholders.

  • Have strong problem-solving skills and the ability to grapple with complex issues to find solutions.

  • Have an eye for detail and be able to work both collaboratively and autonomously, to build joined up strategies that anticipate long-term impacts.

  • Enjoy working with others and are willing to work across the breadth of a team's projects and priorities.

  • An understanding of electricity markets and their functioning would be beneficial, but is not essential for this role, as we can support you in developing this knowledge once in post.

Behaviours

We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

  • Making Effective Decisions
  • Communicating and Influencing
  • Working Together
  • Seeing the Big Picture

Benefits

BEIS offers a competitive mix of benefits including:

A culture of flexible working, such as job sharing, homeworking and compressed hours.
