Job description
This role is being recruited to support the Public Protection Policing Standards Manager (PP-PSM).
The PP-PSM covers the 14 strands of public protection, including some areas that are consistently high profile such as child sexual exploitation, rape and sexual offences, child abuse, forced marriage, FGM, modern slavery, domestic abuse, vulnerability to radicalisation, adults at risk, etc.
A Senior Policy Advisor – Public Protection is being recruited to provide consistent and sustained support to these areas of business. Experience and knowledge of vulnerability, risk and public protection are essential in this role. The successful candidate will work across the criminal justice sector, with a variety of stakeholders to develop, deliver and implement standards and guidance, produce and provide learning and knowledge products and identify and share evidence-based practice to policing to ensure the best possible responses to public protection. They will draft and develop evidence-based policing standards and guidance within specific area of subject matter expertise, engaging with, consulting and advising police forces, agencies and other stakeholder organisations, to support the promotion and embedding of professional practice across policing.
The role will, in the first instance, focus on the priority area of public protection.
Person specification
Some of your responsibilities will include:
- Working with colleagues to collect, interpret and critically evaluate information and best available evidence from a range of sources to determine and develop cost-efficient, value for money options and opportunities for policing standards and guidance which promote professional approaches and deliver improvements in working practices across policing.
- Building effective partnerships with the police service, academic institutions, local communities and other organisations and disseminating, encouraging and supporting evidence-based good practice approaches to delivering policing-related commissions.
- Providing support, guidance and consultancy advice to Police Forces and other agencies within areas of subject matter expertise to identify and develop policies and solutions to new issues and share knowledge to enable consistent approaches across policing.
To be successful in this role you’ll need:
- A Degree or equivalent level 6 qualification and/or significant equivalent work experience in area of subject matter expertise, ideally public protection policing.
- Experience of problem-solving and using an evidence-based approach to develop and/or establish standards for professional practice in private and/or public sector organisations
- Experience of implementing change management and working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, establishing and maintaining positive working relationships and removing unnecessary barriers to service delivery

This role is available as a permanent appointment or as a secondment opportunity for 2 years to:
- colleagues employed directly by the College or the Civil Service. Please note you will be required to obtain the written support of your line manager prior to submitting your application.
- serving police staff at the equivalent rank of Inspector who have their chief officer's approval. Chief Officer’s approval must be of NPCC rank, i.e., CC, ACC or DCC. Approval for a secondment must accompany an application.Central service conditions may apply.
