About IT Operations at Holland & Barrett
  • The IT Operations function provides the foundation of IT services to Holland and Barrett customers by ensuring products are delivered to customers on time, and customers can access new services.
  • Key services have been enhanced by providing resilient infrastructure in the cloud, improving availability to reduce impact to trade.
  • The IT Operations team are investing heavily in building internal capabilities from a new Service Desk and Proactive Monitoring teams to expanding its Delivery capabilities in delivering million pounds infrastructure and Back Office projects.
  • Tech teams are undergoing a diverse range of technical training programme aimed at providing colleagues opportunity to develop their technical and leadership skills and support their career aspirations.
The Role

We are looking for a Senior Network Engineer who wants to explore how APIs, code, and automation can make the network more efficient and scalable. You love to learn new technologies, to code and to tinker. You excel at explaining new concepts in simple terms that communicate both technical and business value propositions. You think hard about hard problems and understand the challenges that network automation engineers are trying to solve.

The right candidate will be comfortable as both a leader and a contributor of projects but have experience taking a lead role for engagements of all sizes. Collaboration with other engineer's project management will be critical to the success of more complex projects.

The Person

The Senior Network Engineer will be responsible for:

  • Implement solutions which drive automation to help reduce time spent by support teams and in turn, free time to innovate and drive service improvement.
  • Where required, provide technical support, and take ownership of technical investigations into complex problems, continuing to work on them until a resolution or workaround can be implemented. Provide technical input and governance to the problem and update stakeholders at regular intervals as the technical investigation continues.
  • Attend relevant customer specific meetings as and where required. Examples may include presenting changes to the change advisory board, providing technical feedback as part of a formal problem review and progress updates during project review meetings.
  • Use your specialist knowledge to contribute to and assist the relevant technical guild; a forum of your peers defining and driving standards to manage and optimise the services.
  • As an effective and highly capable team member, you will self-manage your workload and proactively pickup requests and other work through the ITSM tool. You will also need to be able to mentor and develop other engineers in the wider technical support teams.
  • Author new technical documentation for example for new solutions or changes in configuration required to adhere to updated security standards that is structured and relevant to the audience.
  • Work on other tasks as required to support wider business plans and initiatives.
  • Reviewing current projects and their associated milestones and prioritise
  • Maintaining and Improving existing Network by consistent checks and reviews
  • Supporting IT Service Desk to resolve escalated calls or provide training and support
  • Managing changes to network switches and Firewalls
  • Perform Software and hardware upgrades to Switches Firewalls across the estate

We require the engineers has a minimum of Two of the below:

  • BSc/BA in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • Professional certification CCIE
  • Cisco Devnet Professional
  • Solid background in network administration and architecture
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a senior network role

The applicant should be able to demonstrate the following behaviours:

  • Demonstrate experience in supervising and leading others
  • Ability to follow processes, policies, procedures, guidelines, and best practice

Leadership duties

  • Organise, allocate and monitor work task and projects to appropriate deadlines
  • Ensure incident and problem queues are kept up to date and actioned
  • Ensure effective communication between the IT network team and other teams
  • Ensure effective communication between the IT network team and key stakeholders of projects
  • Ensure the team follow policy, best practice, and procedures whilst undertaking work.
  • Handling escalated queries from other IT Teams
  • Be involved in a team meeting to update members on continuing best practice and expectations
  • Produce reports on team performance and deadlines
  • Provide updates to the network manager on a regular basis
  • Participate in the development and continual improvement of the service, support, processes, and procedures
  • Mentor, coach, and assist members of the network team
