Job description

Job Introduction

We are looking for a really good sub to take a senior journalist role on the BBC Sport website. Our subbing desk checks all of our content before it is published and is therefore a very busy team. In this role you’ll need to love subbing and making sure other people’s content is as good as it can be. Strong editorial judgement is a must. If this sounds like you, we’d love you to apply.

Main Responsibilities

Sub editors on the production desk, also known as senior journalists, are expected to do the following:

  • Sub content and manage indexes
  • Ensure published content is of the highest journalistic standards; it is accurate, fair and impartial and adheres to the BBC’s editorial guidelines
  • Make editorial decisions quickly and confidently with the ability to respond calmly and positively to changing events and circumstances
  • Use data analytics to ensure the website showcases our content in the best way possible
  • Take control of the BBC Sport homepage across all digital platforms, using editorial judgement and flair
  • Provide structured feedback and act as a line manager when required
Are you the right candidate?

We need experienced senior journalists, particularly those who have worked as sub editors in the national or international media, to comply and manage our large portfolio of content to the highest editorial and legal standards.

A consistency of approach, thorough knowledge of platforms and understanding of on-demand media is vital, as well as being able to work under pressure.

Proven editorial judgement and flair in a newsroom - where pictures, graphics, social media, video and stats are just as important as the written word - should be married with considerable experience in journalism.

This is not an entry level role. We're looking for candidates with experience within the area, so please review the criteria for the role before applying.

About the BBC

The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.

We don’t focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you’ve read about our values and behaviours in the document attached below.

Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.

We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC – whether that’s to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.
