What is the Portfolio Management team responsible for?
We are looking for a senior investment writer to join our Franklin Templeton Fixed Income group, with a specific focus on the Emerging Market Debt asset class.
Franklin Templeton Fixed Income (FTFI) is a global fixed income investment team that manages over US$140 billion in assets (as of May 31, 2022) across a comprehensive, diverse range of sector-specific and multi-sector investment strategies. The group is made up of 140+ investment professionals based in London, New York, San Mateo, Chicago, and Singapore, along with regional fixed income teams in Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, the U.A.E, and Poland. With over 50 years of fixed income experience, the team takes an active approach to fixed income management integrating macroeconomic views, bottom-up fundamental research, and quantitative science. Based on the size, global presence and depth of expertise, and leveraging our comprehensive understanding of the interaction of the global economic environment and world bond markets, FTFI is strategically positioned to identify alpha opportunities across all major market sectors.
FTFI has invested in hard and local currency emerging market debt for over 25 years and has considerable experience navigating the complexities of these markets. The Emerging Market Debt Opportunities Team currently manages over US10 billion in assets (as of May 31, 2022)
What are the ongoing responsibilities of a Senior Investment Writer?
  • Works with portfolio managers, research analysts, investment specialists and other portfolio management staff to write and route initial content for scheduled, recurring monthly, quarterly and other periodic investment product commentary for multiple audience type
  • Works with portfolio management/investment specialist groups, data analytics teams, and senior staff to ensure accurate messaging as well as the delivery of actionable intelligence to commentary recipients. This position has a focus on the Emerging Market Debt sector.
  • Responsible for creating commentaries using independent research, attribution reports and other data analytics.
  • Writing and reviewing scheduled, recurring commentary deliverables, with additional focus on more complex or high-profile commentary deliverables (e.g., value-add topic/thematic pieces, newsletters, website content, and special projects)
  • May provide guidance to more junior staff to ensure quality and timeliness of delivery but has no formal supervisory responsibility.
  • Creates commentaries using independent research, attribution reports and other data analytics. Key core focus includes writing and reviewing scheduled, recurring commentary deliverables.
  • Write and oversee production of more complex or high-profile commentary deliverables (e.g., thematic papers, market commentaries, crisis communications, media responses, RFP responses, social media, PIT inquiries, and special projects).
  • Streamline portfolio commentary process and improve quality of commentaries by gaining a solid understanding of commentary cycles and the flow of deliverables between parties, as well as the preferences of various portfolio management groups. May provide guidance to more junior staff to ensure quality and timeliness of delivery but has no formal supervisory responsibility.
  • Manage assigned projects/deliverables by actively communicating with team members about deadlines and informing all interested parties of deliverable timelines and status.
What qualifications, skills and experience would help someone to be successful?
  • Extensive writing experience, strongly desired in the financial services industry.
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in economics, finance, English, communications or similar discipline - preferred
  • Solid, proven understanding of investment products and industry; good working knowledge of the firm’s products and the overall industry.
  • Experience analysing and writing about Emerging Market economies and fixed income preferred, but not required
  • Demonstrated success in adhering to schedules, multi-tasking, project management, attention to detail, organization of materials and cooperating with team members.
  • Knowledge of business desktop applications (i.e.: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Windows, etc.)
  • Effective interpersonal skills, proficiency at prioritization, the proven experience with simultaneously managing multiple tasks, and the ability to operate under scheduled deadlines
  • Proficiency interpreting statistical information and ability to translate data to support written statements
  • Excellent research and analytical skills, including ability to perform simple mathematical calculations or analyses and accurately proofreading documents
  • Works autonomously, with limited general direction/supervision; work is reviewed for accuracy
  • Experience working with cross-functional and multi-channel teams (e.g., Portfolio Management, Marketing, Legal, Creative Services, Principal)
  • A true team player, translating prior knowledge and experience into strong and productive relationships
  • Knowledge of data visualizations and infographics to compliment written work
  • Ability to develop judgment to write or reword work in response to comments from portfolio management/proxy groups, senior staff, Legal, Principal, etc.
