As a Senior Front-end Engineer, you will be helping to architect, build and maintain a new modern approach to a frontend development framework and re-usable componentry, enabling its rapid expansion and integration across our diverse collection of customer-facing digital journeys.


Your work will be utilised by teams of dedicated developers prioritising accessibility and inclusiveness to maximise the experience of our customers. Working closely with the application teams you will help build out a Business wide solution to help improve consistency, quality and time to market for BT’s web applications.


You will lead on creating strong documentation and coding standards, implementing and measuring automated workflows where appropriate. Progressive enhancement is key, and your team’s work will scale intelligently to fit challenging demands in accessibility and usability. You will mentor developers in the team as well as assisting delivery squad engineers in their use of the solutions we provide.


You will help enable the seamless rollout and integration of the system across all BT brand digital products, collaborating closely with individual Engineering Squad Leads to assist in their integration and rollout, minimising breaking changes and maximising overall adoption across BT Business.
What you’ll be doing
  • Working within a team of engineers in the development and maintenance of BT’s Frontend Framework and Component library
  • Deliver measurable and innovative enhancements through new functionality or improvements to the existing codebase. You will accelerate time-to-market for delivery teams through re-use and streamlining architectural complexities, delivering code and componentry that directly enable key journey transformation and migration programmes.
  • Maintaining a scalable development process and ensuring any contributions meet our exacting standards.
  • Working closely with engineering leads to plan and mitigate the technical challenges of large scale updates.
  • Being a vocal champion for best practices and standards across the wider engineering community, holding and contributing to regular knowledge sharing and support sessions.
  • Collaborate closely with all engineering teams to define technical requirements, evaluate technology options, and ensure scalability, performance, and accessibility – all in strong alignment with broader BT architectural principles.
  • Ensure team standards of engineering and operational excellence are upheld, establishing metrics and processes for regular assessment and improvement through the creation and implementation of processes and tools supporting multiple platforms.
  • Facilitate regular communication channels and forums for sharing engineering updates, knowledge, and insight. Work closely with our consumers on how it is working for their engineering teams.
  • Identify and evaluate emerging technologies, tools, and frameworks that can enhance the capabilities and functionality of our team, adopting relevant new technologies, tools, methods and processes that progressively advance the systems capabilities to its different stakeholders.
  • Responsible for the release of updates.
Required Skills & Experiences
  • Deep technical understanding of web development technologies, including modern frameworks like Next.js and React, combined with the use of TypeScript. Additionally, a solid grasp of foundational technologies like HTML and CSS.
  • Ability to identify and mitigate technical risks & proactively address potential roadblock.
  • Excellent understanding of modern web performance and accessibility challenges.
  • Strong knowledge of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in software engineering, keeping the team up-to-date and encouraging innovation.
  • Applied knowledge of architecting front-end code with extensible, sustainable practices.
  • Applied knowledge of modern development tooling and automation techniques.
  • Automated testing techniques.
  • Familiarity with Git and other version control systems.
  • Success in a senior technical role with ownership of complex codebases, design systems, or front-end platforms.
  • Demonstrable experience driving high performance and cultural change.
  • Strong experience influencing decision-making at all levels, including excellent communication skills and experience presenting at conferences.
  • Mentoring more junior members of the team.
  • Strong experience of accessibility and usability practices.
  • Confidence leading code reviews and implementing scalable development processes.
Desired Skills
  • Knowledge of Monorepo technologies like Nx, Learna or Turborepo
  • Applied knowledge or understanding of DevOps
  • Applied knowledge or understanding of Amazon Web Services
