Job description
Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to establish yourself as an integral part of the features and supplements team on an award-winning national business-to-business travel magazine.
Travel Weekly is the market-leading title for the UK travel trade, with unrivalled reach in print, online, on social media and through its agenda-setting events portfolio. We are part of B2B travel and hospitality publisher Jacobs Media Group, with a portfolio that also includes Aspire for the luxury travel trade, and Travolution, with a focus on digital and travel technology. The company also owns hospitality magazine The Caterer and runs an extensive portfolio of events in the UK and overseas, with a rapidly expanding international division.
We are looking for a dynamic, hard-working journalist who can produce outstanding, well-researched features, work across a range of creative projects, and step up to deputise for the features and supplements editor when required. For the right candidate, there is the opportunity to grow and develop into a deputy features editor role – so you will ideally be ambitious, pro-active and eager to learn.
You should be willing to grasp what our trade readers are looking for from Travel Weekly's editorial content and understand how that differs from travel features in consumer publications. You will have a positive, can-do attitude and thrive when working as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. In addition, you will be happy to take a multi-platform approach to destination features and be brimming with ideas for how to maximise editorial content online, in video and on social media.
Responsibilities:
- Write features and source images for weekly Destinations (features) section
- Pitch fresh features ideas and produce well-written, accurate copy to tight deadlines
- Contribute to our portfolio of specialist travel supplements including Cruise and Touring & Adventure, as well as events-related content
- Contribute to sponsored content in print, online, video and social media
- Write web-friendly headlines and social media posts to promote features online
- Present webinars and webcasts as directed by the features and supplements editor
- Represent Travel Weekly and sister brands at events, including outside work hours
- Proofread features pages for the weekly magazine
- Deputise for the features and supplements editor as needed, and contribute occasional news stories as directed by the news editor
- Some international travel required
The person we need:
Essential:
- Minimum three years' features desk experience at a magazine or newspaper, preferably with some travel and/or trade experience
- Proven track record in pitching and writing creative, timely features content
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to work both quickly and accurately, and manage a demanding workload in a deadline-driven environment
- Strong eye for detail and impeccable editorial standards
- Proofreading and editing or sub-editing experience
- Articulate and enthusiastic, with a flexible, can-do approach and proven problem-solving ability
- Strong understanding of how to write for a specific readership
- Experience using CMS, and knowledge of SEO and social media
Desirable:
- Network of contacts with travel trade, travel PRs and freelance journalists
- Experience of speaking at in-person events or presenting virtual sessions
- Experience with advertorial copy and dealing with commercial clients
- Video editing experience
