GSK’s General Medicines therapeutic area (TA) is vital to GSK, with a portfolio of trusted brands that will impact the lives of 700 million patients in the next decade. General Medicines delivers ~£9bn in sales for GSK and >90% of all of GSK pharmaceuticals volumes across ~150 brands and 10,000 SKUs to ~110 countries.
It is our ambition to transform General Medicines from delivering “broadly stable” sales into being a growth engine for GSK. To achieve this, we have defined and are implementing disease area strategies in partnership with R&D, medical, commercial and corporate development. These strategies have and continue to shape of our portfolio through targeted business development acquisitions and in-licensing deals.
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Medical Affairs leader to establish and lead the Scientific Communications and Customer Experience (Cx) Delivery team for the General Medicines TA, as a member of its Medical Leadership Team (LT).
The core purpose of the role is to help shape the enterprise Scientific Communications, Medical Cx strategies and drive General Medicine’s integrated scientific communications through effective delivery, as well as supporting the end-to-end campaign execution in close collaboration with Commercial. He/she will be expected to be a subject matter and data expert, as well as an expert in communications principles and execution, to ensure that the team communicates GSK’s science and data to the right audiences, at the right time through the most relevant channels with delivery based on customer insight and need and success demonstrated both quantitatively & qualitatively.
The ideal candidate of the team will have an outstanding level of desire to lead people with a strong leadership track record of creating/leading/transforming teams. He/she will be an impact player that is restless to drive quality and fast impact. He/she will carry a growth mindset, reflected through maximisation of the opportunity to reach more patients and an immense sense of urgency for strategy and execution.
To achieve the above he/she will lead and steer the integrated team including existing Scientific Communications Directors, Medical Accelerator Team (formerly known as the Digital Hub) and new Medical Customer Experience (Cx) Delivery Leads.
Key responsibilities:
Establish and lead the General Medicines centre of excellence (CoE) driving greater focus and closer integration of Scientific Communications and Medical Cx Delivery
Establish and embed core competencies of all roles within the team
Shape enterprise Scientific Communications and Medical Cx strategies incl. through the communities of practise (CoP) and key partnerships
Lead team to build overall scientific communications strategy within a disease area, aligning individual brand communications tactics under one disease focussed ambition. This includes driving General Medicines’ strategic agenda with regards to external experts, patients, patient advocacy organisations and external partnerships (incl. congress committees) leveraging digital engagement opportunities
Lead team to develop and deliver the scientific communications platform and engagement plans, including global congress disease strategy
Lead Accelerator Team partnering with Commercial to deliver end-to-end digital campaigns, integrated across Medical and Commercial where and as appropriate
Drive a culture and delivery mindset of future ready innovation which supports faster and specific solutions for patients
Be ambitious for patients by using innovation even more competitively to help close gaps in their medical care
Strengthen and continuously improve strategies and processes designed to effectively communicate our science and data internally, externally, and across many different disciplines.

Strategic partnership with the GMALs, GMATs and Medical brand teams
Regional and key LOC partners in developing, iterating and executing on asset/disease area scientific communications strategy and Omnichannel delivery
Global publications in building strong connectivity
General Medicine’s Accelerator Team, Established Products Customer Strategy & Engagement, Medical Digital & Tech, Digital Fuel and Medical Affairs Excellence (MAE), including Capabilities & Practices, Medical Data-to-Insights (mD2I) and Congress Hub
Basic qualifications and experience
Extensive and Broad Pharmaceutical Industry experience
Bachelor’s degree in science, medicine or pharmacy
Significant proven experience at a senior level in Medical Affairs and Scientific Communications
Working & engaging successfully with experts, professional organisations and/or PAGs
Delivering Cx strategies (incl. personas, user journeys, content planning, delivery and analysis/iteration)
Clear understanding of GSK compliance policies and procedures specifically ABPI, GSK Code; previous involvement in review and approval processes
Line management expertise specifically within the matrix and across multiple stakeholders to drive focus on most impactful things
Successful influencing across multiple levels within GSK or related organisation
Effective time management, ability to clearly identify priorities and manage multiple tasks
Demonstrated ability to strategically plan & work across boundaries and geographies effectively
Proactive, self-motivated, self-reliant with effective organisational and prioritisation skills
Effective lateral thinking capabilities – able to shape innovative operational and strategic solutions which deliver better value for patients
Preferred experience
Advanced degree MD, PhD or PharmD
Local, Regional or Global medical, commercial or R&D experience
Experience in respiratory and/or infectious diseases
Proven financial understanding & budget management
Clear understanding of the new digital world
Familiarity with existing GSK platforms (e.g. Content Lab, Apollo, Team Site, Workday, MS Teams and GSK intranet)
