The Arden & GEM (AGEM) Advanced Analytics Unit (AAU) works with various healthcare partners to deliver next generation support systems for both clinical and population health decision making. We provide expert analytical support and advice to help the NHS and other organisations to deliver improved health services to local populations. We have the people, skills, processes, technology, partners and most importantly data necessary to be able to anticipate and respond to the growing and changing demands of the health and social care system. Therefore, we think this role is a great opportunity for a highly experienced Data Scientist to work on high quality and large-scale projects that make an impact on patients’ lives.

The post-holder will work as part of the AAU to help deliver high quality outputs in support of national and regional projects. They will enhance our analytics offering by bringing on board their extensive skills and expertise in delivering end-to-end Data Science projects. The post-holder will bring technical expertise throughout the Data Science iterative life cycle and champion data-driven decision making to ensure that delivery of healthcare is underpinned by evidence. The post-holder will identify research and development projects; scale previously completed work to foster a culture of sharing and replicability; and identify and support new pipeline projects. The post-holder will champion the use of open standards, code sharing, transparency, publication, and knowledge-sharing, including through membership of groups such as NHS-R, AphA, AnalystX and/or NHS-Python. The post-holder will be passionate about the contribution they can make to effective decision-making, and will provide excellent managerial support to junior team members.

As a Senior Data Scientist, you will:

  • Understand the context and national policy within which our customers operate and assist them to identify and structure the problems they need to address
  • Work with customers to structure problems, taking account of the wider business context and differing perspectives of stakeholders, and understanding the capabilities and potential of the wider data science team to determine how solutions can support clients to address their business problems.
  • Maximise the information held within existing NHS data sets, including complex data management and manipulation; work with the data warehouse development team to automate, streamline and productionise data assets to support analysis
  • Have knowledge of up-to-date statistical techniques and machine learning models and be able to pro-actively apply them to a range of problems
  • Understand and translate verbal and written business requirements into briefs for analytical projects
  • Review and appraise published research, grey literature, healthcare policies and organisational activity and financial plans
  • Select and apply the most appropriate analytical techniques and visualisations, underpinned by robust statistical understanding
  • Utilise modelling and forecasting techniques to predict future need and demand
  • Be motivated to undertake self-directed learning to enable application of new analytical and machine learning techniques, keeping aware of new ML models and applications in healthcare and research
  • Have an understanding of Machine Learning Operations (MLOps), particularly with regard to Azure architecture. You will show a good use of Agile development practices and make best use of collaborative tools such as GitHub.
  • Work with a broad spectrum of information from a wide range of sources presenting complex and sophisticated information in a meaningful way to increase organisational knowledge and enable evidence-based decisions.
  • Interpret and explain findings of complex investigation and analysis and recommendations in a clear and intelligible form as presentations or written reports, suitable for a wide range of lay and professional audiences, clearly presenting risks and opportunities
  • Deliver customer insight through expert support to very senior audiences, being able to translate complex analytic concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Give and assist in presentations to audiences of stakeholder staff to aid the audience with understanding of analytical findings.
  • Ensure high quality information presentation is maintained through sharing knowledge, skills and best practice with colleagues, and be open to mentoring junior members of the team to enhance collective team knowledge
  • Effectively manage a number of projects simultaneously and prioritise workload appropriately.
  • Keep abreast of related developments as part of ongoing continuous professional development.
  • Provide relevant and timely specialist advice and guidance on functional and information matters.
  • Promote the work of the AAU within Arden and GEM CSU and beyond.
  • Ensure adherence to information governance and data protection policies
