Job description
ERM is seeking to hire a Senior or Principal Consultant to join our Sustainable Energy Solutions (SES) team.
SES is built upon the acquisitions of Element Energy and E4tech, providing ERM with first class subject matter experts to assist in our drive to a low carbon future. SES now has over 150 experts in sustainable energy, chemicals and transport, working on topics such as sustainable heat and power production and consumption, industrial decarbonisation, low carbon road/air/rail/marine transport, renewable fuels and chemicals, hydrogen and fuel cells, greenhouse gas reductions, carbon capture and sequestration, policy and innovation.
As the climate change agenda and global interest in the energy transition and a more renewable and circular economy escalate, we are seeing an unprecedented increase in requests for support from organisations trying to understand how to play their part.
Why join ERM?
People are at the heart of what ERM does. ERM is committed to the personal and professional development of all our staff, with each person having their own bespoke professional development plan for which they provide input.
As part of the SES team there will be opportunities to develop and apply technical, environmental/social, strategy, project management, business development and team leadership skills. You will join a high calibre team working from one of our UK (London and Cambridge) or Swiss (Lausanne) offices. There will be frequent interactions with our international teams and with clients at a range of locations globally, though most of our work is office, not client-based.
We offer a collegiate working culture, a competitive remuneration package, and a diverse and interesting environment at the cutting edge of sustainable energy.
If you are driven by our goal to decarbonise the energy system, as well as other industrial and economic sectors, and want to work with excellent like-minded people then a role at ERM within the SES team could be for you.
The role
Senior Consultants and Principal Consultants manage small analytical teams and lead the delivery of innovative, high impact projects on low carbon energy, as well as other projects in relation to climate change mitigation and environmental protection. They carry out and oversee research and quantitative analysis of diverse technologies, assess markets and regulations, evaluate environmental impacts, and provide clients with thought leadership, insightful conclusions and strategic advice. Staff at both levels are expected to contribute significantly to the acquisition of new projects/clients through business development activities. Based on interests and team needs, Senior and Principal Consultants may become line managers to support more junior staff in resolving questions related to the day-to-day project delivery, administrative matters, evaluation of performance and their career. This is an opportunity for proactive individuals to develop their skills and build a rewarding career in the low carbon energy sector.
Our Sustainability & Resources (SR) Sector is looking for a consultant with sustainability and life cycle assessment (LCA) skills and experience to join our team, support sustainability related activities across our core areas (energy, transport and chemicals) and help to grow our service portfolio into new strategic areas, in collaboration with other teams at ERM, e.g. agriculture, heavy industry, pharmaceuticals, etc.

- Communicating with clients on project and business development matters;
- Contributing to the development and implementation of E4tech’s company-wide and Sustainability & Resources Sector’s strategies, including designing novel approaches to address sustainability issues;
- Contributing to internal and external communication activities, including participation in conferences.
You will need to demonstrate the following:
- A Post-graduate Degree in sciences, engineering or economics, with a strong environmental and/or energy dimension;
- Professional experience in sustainability assessments and LCA;
- Intermediate Excel modelling skills (i.e. capacity to create and understand Excel worksheet with multiple functions);
- Demonstrated experience in project management;
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely;
- Fluency in English and right to work in the UK/Switzerland
Desirable:
- Work experience as consultant;
- Work experience in the domain of bioenergy, low-carbon fuels, chemicals, power generation, vehicle technology, hydrogen or fuel cells;
- Good command of LCA software, esp. Simapro or GaBi;
- Knowledge of corporate-level GHG accounting (e.g. GHG Protocol) and other globally recognised decarbonisation frameworks, e.g. SBTi.
- Knowledge of sustainability assessment methods e.g. water footprinting;
