Job description
The post is a Senior Clinical Fellow in Women’s Health, this full time post is mainly based at the Lancashire Women’s and Newborn Centre at Burnley General Hospital. It may involve rotation to the Royal Blackburn site. We also provide out patient service to Rossendale Hospital, 8 miles away.
This appointment offers exciting opportunities in light of the major changes currently taking place in the Obstetric, Gynaecology and Sexual Health Directorate within the Trust. In 2010, completion of the new Women and Newborn Centre in Burnley saw all hospital based obstetric deliveries on one site with three Birth centres covering 6,500 deliveries per annum.
Duties of the Post
1. The post holder will be expected to carry out a range of duties encompassing many aspects of
Women’s Health Service. These duties may include labour ward, elective caesarean sections lists, duties within the early pregnancy advisory unit, gynaecology outpatients and inpatients, Postnatal ward, antenatal clinic and theatre lists as well as audit, research and teaching.
1. The is a full time post in the hospital in the employment of East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. The post holder will be responsible to Mr Martin Maher, Clinical Director.
1. There is an on call commitment on the 2ndon call rota, this is a full shift rota including blocks of nights.
The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit comprises of 2 Obstetric Wards, a Maternity Day Assessment Unit, a Birth Suite with 20 rooms (3 of which have pools), 3 Obstetric Theatres and an Early Pregnancy Advisory Unit. Within the Gynaecology Services there is a purpose built day-case
facility and Gynaecology Ward, plus a Gynaecological Assessment Unit where all gynaecological emergencies are triaged. The Urogynaecology Service has an international reputation for excellence and you will have the opportunity to work alongside the Consultants delivering outpatient services which include Fertility, Hysteroscopy, Oncology and Colposcopy. The facilities for Colposcopy are in a purpose designed suite which would be suitable for other outpatient procedures. The department currently has 3 dedicated operating theatres. Equipment is available for advanced minimal access surgery. There is excellent support from consultants in other specialities. Full laboratory, radiology and pharmacy services are available within the hospital.
The department provides a large range of Obstetric and Gynaecological services. There are more than 6,500 deliveries a year and approximately 11,000 Gynaecology referrals each year between the 14 Consultants. There is a Community Gynaecologist who runs a Pregnancy Advisory Service, dealing with a further 900 referrals a year

Staff include 16 + Speciality training doctors, 8 GPST, 4 Specialty Doctors, 1 Senior Clinical Fellow, 2 FY2’s and 2 FY1’s. Currently we also have Medical Students from UCLAN and Lancaster medical schools.
