Senior City Warden

Job description

Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Fixed Term for 12 months

The city wardens and patrolling wardens are responsible for the education and enforcement of environmental crimes across the city including littering, dog fouling, fly tipping and skips and scaffolding offences.

Join our well-established team to ensure the service is effective, efficient, and planned working towards the delivery of team, divisional and strategic performance targets. You’ll be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of staff involved in the patrolling of streets in the city and issuing appropriate fixed penalty notices to offenders.

This is a full-time, fixed term post working 37 hours per week. You’ll have the flexibility to work from home or our offices at York House or City Hall. Hours of work will include weekends, bank holidays and some working outside of normal hours attending meetings or meeting with complainants. You’ll be required to wear a uniform and work.

What you’ll be doing

Supporting the team, you’ll contribute to setting service objectives and the development of work plans in co-ordination with the Team Manager. You’ll undertake quality conversations with staff and monitor individual performance against service standards and targets. You’ll initiate appropriate corrective actions as well as support staff personal development and training. Liaising with stakeholders, you’ll promote and raise public awareness of the problems of litter, waste, graffiti etc. in the city. You’ll plan and lead on project work, deploying resources to tackle “hotspots“ for litter, take away waste, bins left on the street, graffiti etc including taking suitable enforcement and promotion activities. You’ll investigate and lead on complicated cases and respond to customer complaints and issues.

What you’ll need

You’ll have experience in the management or supervision of staff, as well as experience in enforcement work and legal procedures. You’ll have proficient IT skills, to be able to use standard and non-standard software applications relevant to street environmental enforcement. Using excellent communication and interpersonal skills, you’ll be able to work with a diverse range of customers as well as respond to complaints which could be in writing, face to face or in meetings with members of the public, committees, Councillors and MPs. You’ll have good organisational skills, to be able to plan and prioritise yours and the teams work, to meet agreed deadlines.

What we can offer you

As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You’ll enjoy generous annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and the option of flexible working. We’ll also give you the chance to develop your skills and expertise with a variety of training and development opportunities. In addition, you can choose from several flexible benefits, including discounts on city buses and trains. For an illustrative value of your benefits package, take a look at our benefits calculator.
