JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Senior Care Assistant
RESPONSIBLE TO: Deputy & Registered Care Home Manager
JOB SUMMARY
To provide and maintain a high standard of care for service users, whilst supporting the Management team in developing a flexible, caring, sensitive approach to service delivery. To provide a safe and caring environment that promotes good living and underpins the residents’ physical, emotional and psychological well-being. In a manner that respects their dignity and privacy, promotes their independence. To behave in aprofessional manner at all times and develop professional relationships with other agencies including family and other professional services.
PURPOSE OF POSITION
To lead and share with other staff in meeting the personal care needs of service users in a way that respects the dignity and privacy of the individual and promotes independence.
To assist in securing and sustaining the home for the service users, and to promote a safe, caring environment through the highest standards of professional practice conductive to the physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual needs of the service users.
Maintaining general tidiness and promoting a homely atmosphere for service users.
To uphold the key principles of service users’ rights, citizenship, independence, choice, privacy, fulfilment and dignity.
To work as a team and lead the staff on duty and communicate effectively between each other.
To assist the Registered Manager and other Carers to ensure that each service user receives care appropriate to his or her individual needs.
To carry out instructions in accordance with the service user’s Care Plan under the supervision of Deputy/Care Home Manager and the administration and management of medication.
To work to an agreed schedule and rota.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES (Regulations, legislation and guidance)
1.To conform at all times with the Care Homes Health and Safety at Work Policy.
2.To comply with Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) (amended) (coronavirus) (No3) Regulations 2022 and Care Quality Commission (Registration) Regulations 2009. The Medicines Act, COSHH Regulations, Misuse of Drugs Act and Hazardous Waste Regualtions.
3.In addition the Employee shall have a good working knowledge of all policies and procedures in order to comply fully with local authority, CQC – Care Quality Commission, CCG – Clinical Commissioning Group, and other current guidance, regulation and legislation for care homes.
4.Responsibility and accountability for ensuring the 5 key Fundamental Standards that are set out in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 as amended are followed.
5.Comply with all Infection Control Prevention and follow care homes policies and procedures.
6.Keep up to date with local and government guidelines, taking abreast of required training ensuring responsibility to keep up to date. To undertake all mandatory training and additional training/programmes orgainsed in order to meet the qualifications and experience for your role. Attend scheduled staff meeting.

8.Demonstrate an understanding of safe guarding policy and procedures in the home. Know when and how to use the whistle blowing procedure.
9.Support the Registered Manager in his/her duties as the “responsible officer” for the Home under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Fire Regulations.
10.To work at all times to the standards outlines in the Code of Practice for Social Care Workers.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES - RESIDENT CARE
1.To ensure the service users privacy and dignity is maintained at all times and respect service users beliefs and values.
2.To uphold the key principles of service users rights, citizenship, independence, choice, privacy, fulfilment and dignity.
3.To maintain confidentiality and discretion in communicating personal matters to senior and other members of staff and other service user and relatives. No information or pictures to be recorded or uploaded on any social networking systems.
4.To promote a safe and caring environment maintaining general tidiness and promoting a homely atmosphere. Pay due respect to service users possessions and ensure that bedrooms and communal areas are tidy and presentable.
5.Contribute with planning/reviewing individual care by means of care planning, and read / follow each individual service users care plan.
6.Contribute to the efficient operation of the home including your daily activities with your team members. Ensure safe practice, monitoring providing guidance to others.
7.To assist service users who need help with personal care which includes the bath, shower, bed bath, foot and nail care, hair care, helping service users to shave, mouth and denture care, toileting, washing and dressing.
8.Assist service users identified with specific mobility and physical disabilities, including personal care and everyday living needs. Follow the care homes policies and procedures and training for use of care aids and equipment, including any hoisting or specialised equipment. Follow correct Manual Handling / People Moving training techneques.
9.To assist service users who request to go to bed during the day and help those service users who request to get up in the morning, providing a high standard of care during the day, including hygiene, continence, mobility, dressing and general care.
10.To ensure that service users are socially presentable in appearance at all times.
11.To ensure that service users have any aids e.g. - Dentures, Hearing Aids, Spectacles etc fitted, cleaned and in working order.
12.To be responsible for managment and organising/ delivery of medication, district nurses, chemist, doctors, opticians, dieticians, chiropodist, mental health clinics, appointments and emergencies.
13.Follow the procedure for emptying and disinfection of commodes after each use.
14.Ensure all emergency equipment is in place and working (sensor mats, bedrails, floor mats, bed bumpers and emergency buzzers or other). Answer emergency bells or calls from service users immediately and seek further assistance if required.
15.Participate in the development of activites in conjuction with service user’s likes and interests / hobbies in which they can join in and will enhance their quality of life. Promote well being and physical activity through positive conversation, reassurance, comfort, external outings, reading, writing, and recreations e.t.c. Follow the daily planned activities.
16.To be involved in making of and serving of light meals/beverages to service users, assist those who require support and help in feeding/drinking. Ensure at main meal times the dining room experience is delivered to a high standard.
17.To carry out and record hourly checks on service users as instructed by the Registered Care Home Manager for those who remain in there room. If identified/risk assessed carry out more frequent checks as per instructions in service users care plan and by the Manager.
18.To assist service users throughout the day with whatever they need, maybe even just for company, re-assurance, or refreshment.
19.Ensuring 24hr fluid intake and out take is completed, recorded and totalled. If a service user requires a specific diet through-out the day it is your responsibility to follow that directive.
20.To summon medical assistance in the event of a service user becoming unwell.
21.Follow the Falls policy and procedure for witnessed / unwitnessed falls taking the right action and completing all the relevant documentation.
22.Report all incidents / accidents or unexplained injuires immediately taking the right action and completing all the relevant documentation. Report your findings and communicate to oncoming shift and Deputy/Care Home manager.
23.Follow and carryout regular pressure relief programmes for those service users who require assistance/pressure relieving care. Recording accurately on the individual service users Pressure Relief documentation.
24.Assist Deputy Manager in the weekly service user weight management programmes and ensure care notes, audits and checks and any other form of written report that affects your work are read and kept up to date.
25.To act as a key worker for a number of service users giving support to other staff. Ensuring that you greet any service users, for whom you are a key worker, on admission to the home and assist them to settle in.
26.Support service users who become end of life.
27.Follow the CareHomes policies and procedures in record keeping to a high standard. Complete all records and maintain accurate notes and record all relevant facts and details, clearly, precisely and legible. Complete all sections on the records. Update all required service users files with daily handover reports.
OTHER
1.During the time available between attending to service users help and organise/monitor cleaning/housekeeping duties as per Hygiene Schedules and help and organise/monitor laundry duties through-out the shift.
2.Participate in the handover procedures before and end of shift and ensuring that all details are communicated for the ongoing care of individual residents. Complete daily bedroom inspection checks.
3.To attend three monthly supervision reviews and 12 monthly apprasels with the Care Home Manager and attend staff meetings.
4.To report to the Deputy / Care Home Manager any verbal concerns or complaints raised by the service user or visitors.
5.To ensure readiness including the team, to commence work at the time stated on the Duty Rota and not to abandon duty without permission from Deputy/Care Home Manager.
6.Adhere to and the team, the policy relating to personal appearance and the uniform policy whilst on duty.
7.To carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required by the Home Manager or person in charge. Consideration will be given to your skills and status before requesting that you perform these duties.
PREMISIS
1.To conform at all times with the day procedure/routine and all other procedures in the home. Know the address and telephone number of the care home.
2.Advise the Registered Manager/Deputy of any malfunctions of the heating, lighting, domestic appliances or emergency systems and ensure the security of the premises and to enter such details in the Maintenance Repair Book.
3.When night/morning staff have finished shift complete a security check of the building paying attention to (No build up of rubbish, windows fastened to restrictors, emergency exits not blocked). Periodically check on the building as instructed by the Registered Care Home Manager with special reference to fire prevention and security.
4.To assist in the cleaning of the Home as the need arises e.g. cleaning up spills immediately and after meal times.
5.Make or organise the changing of beds; tidying rooms, light cleaning; emptying and cleaning commodes. Also monitor and manage the domestic cleaners as per domestic cleaning schedule.
6.Answer all emergency bells/calls promptly; and following security precautions for any vistors during shift. Obtain authorisation for visitor(s) before entry ensure identification is sought (badges/ID cards etc). Act with courtesy at all times. Monitor staff to ensure these procedures are followed.
7.To work at all times, within the guidelines of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Employee Operational Procedure Handbook, Employee Induction Programme and Company Health and Safety Policy and Procedure.
8.To be aware of all fire exits, means of escape and emergency points for raising the alarm within the Home and follow the policy and procedures in the event of an emergency. To complete all Company Health and Safety and Fire checks as requested.
9.To ensure the appropriate segregation of waste material. That it is disposed of in accordance with current legislation and Company Policy and Procedure for Infection Control.
