Job description
This role sits within Fleet and Engineering, Supply Chain Operations, and deliver services which support our primary delivery functions such as rail plant, assurance, engineering specialisms.
The Senior Buyer will support the Fleet and Engineering team with procurement of a range of services and parts for the rail fleet machines in SCO and sit within a wider team of Contract and Inventory Management. Our primary role is to ensure on time and reliable supply of services and goods to enable our rail fleet to delivery it’s services such, as seasonal treatment, ballast cleaning and overhead line renewals.

Main ResponsibilitiesYoui will implement and monitor agreed strategies for commodity area including development of individual contracts and undertaking procurement, negotiation and contracting.
- Develop and implement individual project and steady state contracting strategy proposals including preparation and evaluation of tender documents and negotiation of contracts.
- Provide post contract management reporting for a full range of contracts, such as data analysis for KPIs, spend, inventory usage/frequency against commodity and service groups.
- Provide dedicated support to senior staff and stakeholders in respect of individual projects and/or contract/commercial issues, including ‘rapid response’ to potential stakeholder issues.
- Target specific goods, services and/or suppliers to identify how tangible improvements may be made in the procurement of these goods and services.
- Attend and contribute to regular contract management meetings with key stakeholders and suppliers to monitor whether maximum value was delivered via the contract and service.
- Support and collate endorsements and approval of project and /or contract/commercial strategies and contract variations.
- Provide all services to service delivery teams in a timely and cost-effective manner and contribute positively towards the achievement of service delivery objectives.
- Feedback continuous improvement opportunities for future contracts/procurement strategies.
What skills and experience are we looking for?
Essential
- Recognised skills in contractual and commercial matters, with credibility and experience to act as advisor to other staff.
- Successful procurement background with practical intermediate level experience.
- Contributed towards maintaining successful relationships with suppliers.
- Knowledge of relevant contract terms.
- Strong negotiation skills.
Desirable
- Membership of appropriate professional institution.
- Inventory management experience.

The position is based in The Quadrant, Milton Keynes.
Hours: 35 hours per week with some hybrid working and travel as required
IRC2256878 - The role is a 12 month secondment/FTC post with potential to extend or become permanent

Salary range: £41,711 - £46,925 per annum depending on skills and experience
