CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Performs technical level operations service work under regular supervision from a technical superior. Work includes performing semi-skilled manual laboring operations in the maintenance of park lands and related facilities and structures; creating graphic arts in the production of roadway and directional signs; using hand and bench tools; and operating less complex types of motor and mechanical equipment. Work also includes performing public works construction and maintenance tasks; tree care and maintaining grounds using basic horticultural and landscaping principles; applying inventory control of materials and supplies of minimum monetary value and/or the receipt, logging and distribution of stationary and supply items; manual and clerical work in stock handling, receipt, storage, maintenance, and issuance of supplies, materials and equipment; and keeping routine stores records.

Essential duties and responsibilities consist of the following which are common to all security posts, training is provided for building specific duties prior to security post assignment:
Arrive on time for the start of each shift fully attired in the County supplied building security guard uniform.
Greet visitors; check visitor credentials/identification; issue visitor pass/badge; log visitor entry/exit from the building.
Provide information and directions to visitors, delivery persons.
Attempt to deescalate situations involving disruptive visitors; monitor building interior and exterior security cameras and report suspicious activities according to established procedures.
Learn and maintain a high degree of knowledge related to each aspect of security for assigned security post(s) within buildings, to include: ingress/egress door locations; intrusion, fire, panic, glass breakage alarm systems; access control system; visitor management system (VMS); CCTV system; fire extinguisher locations; escape and assembly area; and other life safety aspects for each building.
Work closely with Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services when they respond to site emergencies, making certain all required protocols are followed and building and incident information is conveyed accurately.
Monitor intrusion and fire alarms; provide first report to 911 of various alarms to include: fire, intrusion, panic or disruptive visitors who will not comply with instructions.
Participate in fire evacuation, active shooter, shelter -in-place and other building wide drills.
Addresses all building security concerns and complaints for the assigned security post; escalate difficult issues to the Building Security Zone Supervisor for assistance.
Conduct daily shift change briefing with relieving building security guard; complete daily report of events; complete daily activity and incident reports
Conduct daily building rounds to the ensure safety within the building as well as the security of doors and windows is maintained; activate/deactivate building alarms.
Performs overtime and on-call work on a rotational basis.
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) and one (1) year of related experience.
PERFERRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must be at least 21 years of age
Possession of a Maryland State Police issued Security Guard Certification Ability to greet and interact positively and courteously with the general public and employees of the County.
Experience working as a building security guard or other similar equivalent experience.
Experienced in use of electronic security systems: access card system, intrusion alarms, panic alarms, CCTV system.
Basic personal computer system use.
Two-Way radio operation.
Experience assisting with building safety drills such as, fire evacuation, shelter-in-place.
Must be able to read, understand, and apply written rules and directions.
Must be in good general health and able to stand and/or walk for an extended period of time and able to lift or carry objects up to fifty (50) pounds.
Must be able to ascend/descend stairs, up to five stories.
Must maintain a current First Aid Card.
Must be able to maintain poise and self- control under stressful conditions.
Must be CPR certified by the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or other recognized certifying body.
Must be willing and able to participate in building fire evacuation drills.
Must have basic computer skills and telephone etiquette.
Security guards must not have criminal records or be on probation.
Security guards must not have been charged or convicted of any form of violence.
Must have the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with management, supervisors, peers, building occupants, first responders and the general public.

The employee is frequently required to climb steps of up to five flights and to sit for extended periods while interacting with the public, and other building users.
The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the environment is usually moderate.
This position is designated as an emergency/essential position and may be required to respond in a variety of emergency situations: floods, snow and ice storms, tropical storms, etc. The employee is responsible for reporting any conditions within the building or grounds that may be hazardous to the public, co-workers, or other county employees.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Training will be provided by Howard County following employment and must be maintained during tenure of employment.
