Job description
The Scrum Master acts as the servant leader and coach for one or more delivery teams within the organization. An effective Scrum Master promotes attributes of a high functioning dedicated agile team, include perpetuating team dynamics of support and value driven delivery, protecting the teams from outside interference, removing impediments, facilitating Scrum rituals, driving continuous improvement and promoting healthy Agile practices within the teams and across the organization. As part of a larger community of agile practitioners, he/she is an advocate of Agile practices both within the team and the organization.
Ensure Agile teams are practicing the core agile values of human interaction, delivering working software, customer collaboration, and responding to change in the following ways:
- Actively shield teams from interference
- Provide team with tools to identify and remove impediments to continuous team delivery of valuable software
- Mentor teams toward becoming increasingly self-managed and cross-functional - with fewer dependencies
- Foster a team environment which encourages team members to both seek help from within the team and to lean-in to help the team achieve sprint/iteration goals
- Partner with Product Owners to effectively manage the backlog, incorporate customer feedback, and apply user story writing best practices
- Facilitate team Agile events; co-facilitate high-level team and company agile events
- Work with teams to identify their capacity to ensure that they can meet the sprint/iteration objectives
- Participate in discussions related to trade-offs to bring in new work
- Mentor team in use of outcome rather than output-based value development
- Learn and start to apply Agile planning techniques like quarterly planning
- Create a psychologically safe environment for team(s)
Support progress reporting and sprint/iteration metrics in order to provide team with tools for self-inspection in areas of team health, success and improvement
Active participation in the Agile maturation process for the organization
- Effectively describe Agile roles, events and methodologies
- Practice and continue to develop mentoring and coaching techniques
- Participate in scrum master guilds or communities of practice
- Co-facilitate one or more agility workshops (e.g. Agile & Lean Fundamentals or User Story Writing Workshop)
- Contribute to one or more corporate communications efforts furthering agile transformation as an organization
- Actively learn about multiple Agile methodologies (Lean, XP, Kanban)
