Job Focus
The successful candidate will have a passion for pharmaceutical microbiology. They will take an active role in assisting drug development by applying a variety of microbiological testing methodologies to assist manufacture and assessment of drug substances (DS), including raw materials and intermediates, and drug products (DP). Working knowledge and ability to perform environmental monitoring of non-sterile manufacturing/packaging areas, general water analysis (plates counts, coliforms and bacterial endotoxin), microbial sampling during cleaning validation/verification, hold time studies, microbial identification tests, media qualification and culture maintenance. The successful candidate will also be involved in outsourcing of microbial tests such as microbial limit testing, preservative efficacy and container closure integrity testing working with vendors to develop protocols, reviewing data and problem solving as appropriate.

Tasks may include:
- Sampling and testing of non-sterile manufacturing facilities, including environmental monitoring, water sampling/testing, endotoxin testing, microbial identification, and media qualification. This includes entering data into a LIMS system and other electronic repositories.
- Supporting the purified water online total organic carbon (TOC) meters via system suitability testing and calibration.
- Supporting project groups with microbial outsourcing activities of USP/EP tests such as microbial limit testing and specified organisms.
- Collaborating with colleagues and subject matter experts to assess the most appropriate approach to aid manufacturing and project activities, including scheduling, testing per standard procedures, and reporting of results.
- Interacting with project team members in a fast-paced environment for various tasks including providing technical assistance for raw material and DS/DP projects as part of the microbiological team, performing microbial risk assessments, presentation of data and critical review of data and preparation of technical reports.
- Performing microbial risk assessments for new products and determining testing strategy commensurate to phase of development.
- Maintaining written records of all experimental work in accordance with Good Laboratory Practice/Good Manufacturing Practice and departmental philosophies.
- Advocating new technology, process improvements and informatics initiatives designed to increase efficiency and compliance.
- Accountability for laboratory investigations and assisting with handling GMP, quality and compliance issues resulting from GMP deviations, material / product defects.
- Maintaining a contemporary awareness of Global Business Practices, methods, specifications, SOPs, Pharmacopoeias, ICH guidelines and regulatory expectations for cGMP micro lab and material related activities.
Qualifications
BSc or MSc degree in microbiology, biology, or related field with significant experience in a relevant industry.
Desirable Attributes
- Minimum of three years relevant experience in a GMP pharmaceutical microbiological lab.
- Ability to meet multiple project milestones under general supervision and manage expectations.
- Experience with a wide variety of software and information systems (e.g., electronic lab notebooks and LIMS).
- Ability to perform data analysis, record results in electronic lab notebooks and effectively communicate in a team environment.
- Experience in container closure integrity testing (vacuum decay and immersion testing).
- Experience in performing microbial risk assessments (product and process).
