ROLE POSITIONING AND OBJECTIVES
What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?
This is an excellent opportunity for a professional to join an FMCG FTSE 100 company, looking to support the business programme to shape product safety approaches for nicotine products as well as other potential products designed to provide a variety of consumer benefits.
The primary role is to direct and deliver toxicological risk assessments in accordance with the Consumer Product Safety (CPS) guidelines, R&D Policy Framework, Corporate Positions and specific legislation for our product categories.
The successful candidate will contribute individually as part of a larger project team.
What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?
The purpose of the role is to provide toxicological guidance to the project teams assessing novel ingredients across our different product platforms. To deliver a toxicological programme that can unlock novel products and ingredients commercially, while supporting the communication of the learnings, helping position BAT as industry experts & achieve desired business growth.
This role encompasses strategic scope, with the delivery & communication of toxicological considerations for the identified ingredients and products. Development of toxicological data packages to support consumer tests and specified launches across various product categories.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Line Manager and other colleagues to overcome challenging assessments, and outline data requirements/gaps to build robust safety evaluations of products. In this role you will be working with senior toxicologists to understand data/knowledge gaps associated with new ingredients and product introductions and proposing plans to address these areas. Whilst also working with project teams, you will have the opportunity to work closely with analytical, sensory and compliance teams to outline efficient ways to address identified gaps, and outline what success looks like.

WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR
- Work as part of the bigger project team to bring in toxicological safety considerations and utilize CPS’s knowledge and expertise in the execution of activities
- Recommend and guide the project teams on toxicology evaluations, tests and design needed to build the data packages for the individual product launches
- Author, review and sign off risk assessments as part of the toxicological evaluation of new ingredients and materials
- Apply appropriate solutions or approaches to identify and resolve problems based on an understanding e of biology, toxicology, and/or chemistry
- Maintain and build effective working relationships with internal stakeholders, suppliers, and designated contacts within BAT
- Challenge current paradigms & approaches. Identify & deliver an overarching project that enables an efficient, robust yet simplified approach to new ingredients & natural materials
- Be an integral part of the project team taking these products to commercialisation and driving and securing insight on safety matters once in market through surveillance
- Act, behave and become a knowledgeable enabling partner. Lead by example to deliver CPS culture and vision. Tap into and leverage expertise within affiliate organisation to drive our programmes harder.
CAN THIS BE YOUR FUTURE ROLE?

- Are you used to tight deadlines and working in a matrixed environment?
- Have you worked in a Product Safety Role before?
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Experience in applying the principles of toxicology & risk assessment to support product toxicological safety
- Ability to tailor scientific communications to different audiences
- Proven knowledge of the principles of Toxicological Quantitative Risk Assessment
- Good awareness of FMCG business operations or Pharmaceutical operations
- Good communication, organisational, and planning skills, and ability work both as a team member and independently
- Positive ‘can do’ attitude and effective problem solver. Proven attention to detail and accuracy in work
- Fluent in English
- MSc in Toxicology (or another relevant subject) advantageous but not essential
- Relevant science background equivalent to a degree level qualification, preferably in a biology or chemistry discipline, with good understanding of the principles of Toxicology
- May be a member of a relevant professional body such as the British Toxicology Society.
BENEFICIAL
- 2-4 years of post-graduate experience in a product safety role, or equivalent
- Experience in oral products such as food or dietary supplements.
