Job description
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Scientific Technician to join the Crop Transformation and Genome Editing Team. This part-time role (16 hours per week) supports the team in performing plant transformation (wheat, Brassica napus, tomato and potato) in tissue culture, growing and genotyping of transgenic and genome edited plants.
The work involves carrying out plant (e.g., wheat, Brassica napus, tomato and potato) transformation, using particle bombardment or Agrobacterium tumefaciens, and sub-culturing experiments to generate transgenic lines, including preparation of sterile plant culture media and stock solutions; co-ordinating the final stages of the transformation process, from young plantlets in tissue culture to harvesting/threshing, which includes potting up, sampling of leaf tissue, extracting of plant DNA and PCR-genotyping.
The post will also be responsible for day-to-day management of the GM seed store and a non-GM seed archive.
The successful candidate must have experience with plant tissue culture, DNA extraction and PCR genotyping. Experience with plant embryo isolation & microscopy, genome editing techniques and molecular cloning would be desirable. You must be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of Health & Safety and GM Guidelines, attention to detail and clear record-keeping. Ideally you must be flexible, willing to undergo training and able to work as part of a team.
