ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is a state-of-the-art research centre that generates beams of neutrons and muons for research in physics, chemistry, materials science, geology, engineering, and biology. ISIS supports an international community of more than 3000 scientists, who visit the facility to make use of the unique and advanced instrumentation for their research.
We are looking for two students with a passion for science and the enthusiasm to engage a wide range of audiences on the important contributions of large-scale research facilities. Based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, the students will have the opportunity to engage directly with staff and users to learn about, and disseminate the broad range of science that takes place at ISIS. The role would be ideal for students who enjoy using different types of media to communicate technical concepts to non-expert audiences. The students must be able to work well on their own and as part of a team, and be interested in a wide range of scientific areas and their impacts on society.
Summary of Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Speaking with staff and users to collect information about the technical capabilities and key research outputs of the instruments at ISIS.
- Writing clear, consistent and engaging content on the instruments at ISIS.
- Designing large- and small-scale print materials and digital communications to present the information collected about ISIS instruments.
In order to apply for the role we are looking for the following:
Essential
- Are in full-time education at university and returning to university/studies following the placement
- The right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
- Strong communication skills
- Experience of producing physical and/or digital communication materials
- The willingness to learn new skills, both technical and non-technical
Desirable:
- Experience in graphic design, or video/audio production
- Experience of managing a project
