Job description
Would you expect new releases every week from a 150 year old retailer?
It doesn’t matter whether your coding skills came from a hobby or a training course. Because at Sainsbury's, we just care about what you can learn to do with them. To shine here, you need to be agile, curious and analytical. You need to love tech and working with others to find creative solutions to problems. You need to be happy that we roll out something new nearly every week. Whether you’re a graduate or totally self-taught, straight out of school or with another career behind you, get ready to see your stuff go live.
Why join us
You’ll get to see the results of your work. It could be our self-service tills and scanners. Maybe Argos touchscreens. Perhaps even Nectar Prices, a huge programme that’s just been rolled out. On the 20-month programme you’ll work on live projects with the people who are training you. And instead of waiting months or even years for the launch, you’ll see it within weeks. As importantly, once you’ve completed the programme, you’ll be one of our engineers.
What you’ll be doing
There’s a huge range of platforms, technologies and disciplines, and you’ll experience as many as possible as you rotate across the business. You’ll earn while you’re working on real projects, and learn about how you learn best — in teams, on video courses and with different tech stacks.
You’ll be based from home and in one of our amazing tech hubs in London or Coventry. It will see you spend time with three different tech teams, designing and implementing software and systems using the latest technologies and agile methodologies .
As importantly, you’ll change the way people shop online and in-store. You’ll also collaborate with other people on the programme to work on a Betaworks project — you and your team will collaborate on a project that has real value to the business, and present it back to invested stakeholders. Your project has potential to influence our tech direction or even go live, but in terms of the experience you’ll gain in applying what you’ve learned and even in mentoring others will stay with you. There’s a huge interest in Betaworks right across the business, and that could be where you shine.
Who you are
You seek stuff out, come up with ideas and solve problems. You want to own your learning and take a few risks, and you’ll approach each rotation with an open mind to see what you can get out of it.
What you could do in future
You’ll have every opportunity to take your career in the direction you want it to go — wherever that is. People have taken on senior engineer roles just two years after the course, while others have gone into areas that are more about strategy. This is a huge organisation with some of the best-known brands around, and there will always be a route to what you want to do.
In return
You’ll enjoy so much when you join us. There’s colleague discount across our brands – Sainsbury’s, Argos and Habitat. Plus you’ll have a holiday allowance bonus scheme, pension plan, flexible working and special offers on gym memberships, restaurants, holidays, retail vouchers and more.

Applications open on 29 May for two weeks but may close early if we receive a high volume of applications.
