Permanent: Initially 20 hrs per week, flexible work pattern to suit the individual.

The ABER Instruments Operations Team are seeking to appoint an individual who is safety oriented, with good attention to detail and a team player, to coordinate the health and safety of ABER Instruments. Working alongside the Head of Health, Safety & Facilities (HoHSF), the ideal candidate would have experience of working within an environment where health and safety was their priority, be familiar with collaborative working and have excellent administrative skills.

Main purpose
The Health and Safety Coordinator will assist the Head of Health, Safety & Facilities (HoHSF) in ensuring ABER’s obligations towards health and safety are met. The postholder will support the HoHSF in the implementation of new, and existing legislation and internal procedures. The post holder will also help to support ABER Leaders to achieve safe working conditions, legal compliance and the development of an effective H&S culture.Based at ABER’s head office in Aberystwyth UK. Reporting to the Head of Health, Safety & Facilities.
Duties to Include
- Assisting the HoHSF in developing, implementing and maintaining ABER’s health and safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the relevant legislation and guidance.
- Providing advice and support on all aspects of H&S to Leaders, Managers, Supervisors and employees to ensure compliance with legislation and ABER procedures and processes.
- Work with our H&S Consultants (Citation) and use Atlas for managing Risk and COSHH assessments, document distribution, and training, ensuring up-to-date records for all employees.
- Assist in the process for gaining ISO45001 accreditation for Health & Safety Management.
- Work with key staff members to help develop their skills to undertake Risk & COSHH Assessments and ensure all assessments are reviewed and updated as necessary.
- Ensure COSHH Assessments are completed for all chemicals in line with requirements outlined on the safety data sheets (SDS).
- Facilitate the annual H&S audit with Citation and ensure any follow up points are addressed.
- Reviewing safety information submitted by contractors and offer support and guidance to staff who manage contractors.
- Complete the H&S induction for all new starters.
- Ensure relevant H&S information is displayed for both employees & visitors.
- Any other duty as required by the HoHSF commensurate with the role.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required
- A good understanding of Health and Safety.
- Highly organised with strong attention to detail.
- Highly motivated and able to work proactively to keep safety standards up to date.
- Skills, knowledge and experience to recognise hazards in the workplace, with the ability to implement controls to protect employees and others from harm.
- Demonstrates drive and enthusiasm for your work.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to work independently of others.
- Flexibility to work across all departments providing Health and Safety knowledge.
- Demonstrates the confidence to challenge others when implementing Health and Safety standards
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- NVQ Level 3 in a safety related field or IOSH Certificate – desirable. Full training can be provided for the right candidate.
- Experience within a Health and Safety role.
- Property maintenance experience would be desirable.
- An understanding of Employee Ownership.
