JOB DESCRIPTION

Safety Case Review Engineer – Radiological Safety Assessment Services, Warrington or Whitehaven based

CRA is one of the UK’s largest integrated Risk, Safety and Human Factors consultancies. We have a long history of helping our clients in the UK nuclear and other high hazard industries manage risk and ensure the safety of their operations. As part of the Assystem Group we also have opportunities to support a wide variety of projects around the world.

CRA recognises that our staff are our greatest asset and we strive to develop each consultant technically and professionally by providing them with the opportunities and support they need to grow and realise their potential. For more junior staff, Initial Professional Development (IPD) focuses on attaining the competencies and the range of technical experience required to achieve Chartered status with their chosen professional institution through a combination of internal and external training and project experience. For our more experienced staff, our Continued Professional Development (CPD) programme provides support to allow maintenance of existing skills and expertise, while developing new ones in complimentary areas.

We aim to provide a diverse and inclusive working environment with a healthy work-life balance and recognise the benefits that this brings to our business, our clients and our people.

Summary – Safety Case Review Engineer:

A Periodic Review is required approximately every ten years to confirm that the existing Safety Case remains fit for purpose on a facility involved in the storage of Special Nuclear Materials.

As part of that review, it is necessary to confirm that the radiological safety assessments (including internal and external hazards) remain of a suitable standard compared with modern standards and that any ‘gaps’ in this area are either recorded as not significant enough to warrant revision or are added to a potential schedule of improvements to be addressed according to their significance and priority.

This overall scope of work is to support the identification of gaps by reviewing the radiological safety assessments making up the existing Safety Case as part of a multidisciplinary team and to record the findings. Also, to assist the ALARP Review of these findings and then assist with the development of an Improvement Plan to address any reasonable improvements agreed at the ALARP Review.

The scope is divided into three packages of work; each supporting an individual facility but mindful of the symmetries between them so that the opportunity is taken to identify learning worth sharing between them and to ensure an optimised gap identification and close out strategy.

Profile

Scope of Work – Safety Case Review Engineer:

Radiological Safety Assessor(s) are required to support tasks as part of a multidisciplinary team including Safety Case, Operations and Engineering.

Across the three facilities, your tasks would comprise the following:

  • To conduct a targeted review of HAZANs and OSMs which provide the radiological safety assessments for the facilities to confirm their fitness for continued operations and where necessary to identify gaps against modern standards and opportunities for improvements to close these.
  • To assist with the ALARP review of identified gaps as part of a multidisciplinary team to identify any required improvements to close these where appropriate.
  • To assist with the scoping activities to develop a plan for the delivery of agreed improvements.
  • General support for meeting attendance etc.

We are committed to equal treatment of candidates and promote, as well as foster all forms of diversity within our company. We believe that bringing together people with different backgrounds and perspectives is essential for creating innovative and impactful solutions. Skills, talent, and our people’s ability to dare are the only things that matter !. Bring your unique contributions and help us shape the future.
