The oasis team at UHD maternity is looking to recruit an enthusiastic individual who is passionate about helping to provide high quality care for both mothers and babies. The successful candidate will work as part of our safeguarding team in community across Poole and Bournemouth, supporting women with complex social needs and vulnerable families.
As an Oasis Team Maternity Support Worker, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside midwives, obstetricians, neonatologists and other agencies including children’s social care.
The maternity support worker role carries out area specific tasks which include:
- Visiting mothers and babies at home in both the antenatal and postnatal period to support with basic parenting skills including feeding, care of newborn and safe sleeping, reporting to the midwife any concerns or deviation from the normal
- Assisting mothers to breastfeed/formula feed
- Supporting a small caseload of women, providing 1:1 education and parenting support e.g. bathing, making up of formula feeds sterilisation, safe sleeping etc
- Supporting the team with administration duties
- Attendance at multidisciplinary meetings
- Reporting any safeguarding concerns to the Midwife or Safeguarding Lead
- Undertake resuscitation of the newborn
- Undertake post-delivery / post-operative maternal and neonatal observations
- Undertake maternal and neonatal blood tests
- Undertake the care and transfer of mothers and babies from the intrapartum setting to the postnatal ward
- Responsibility for maintaining a clear and orderly clinical area as part of the ward/department team
- Administer flu and pertussis vaccinations (once RCN non-registered competency document is completed)
- To support the Pan Dorset Treating Tobacco Dependency service, holding a small caseload to support women to stop smoking in pregnancy
UHD Maternity Services provides a full range of midwifery care and is the obstetric centre for high risk care across East Dorset. The service delivers care to in excess of 4100 women per annum. The Maternity Unit was rated ‘Good’ by the CQC inspection in September 2019.

The Maternity department at UHD is committed to education and development and invests in an education team which supports learning and practice development across the department. Learning and development opportunities currently in place are as follows:
