Job description
Job Description - Robotics Engineer
Summary:
Oshen is a start-up making autonomous micro-vessels that collect ocean data. We’re looking to hire a robotics/embedded systems engineer. Website: https://www.oshensail.com/.
Skills and experience:
Must have:
- C++ / embedded systems experience. There should be examples where this experience has been used in practical projects, e.g making drones, robots etc
- CAD modelling and 3D printing - rapid, design, testing and iteration
- Practical skills necessary to see small projects through: e.g splicing, soldering, wiring
Beneficial to have:
- Real time operating system (FreeRTOS) experience
- Collaboration in programming: collaborative use of github
About us:
- We’re a start-up making autonomous micro-vessels to collect ocean data.
- Our main applications are improved weather forecasts, improving climate change predictions and environmental monitoring.
- In the space of a year we’ve received backing from the European Space Agency, coverage in BBC news and The Times, and begun testing prototypes in the Irish sea.
- We’re a team of 3 engineers and based out of Caernarfon, North Wales

Why work for us:
- Your work could contribute better climate change models, research and more efficient marine biodiversity monitoring. In the more immediate term, we’re also aiming to set a world first and autonomous cross the Atlantic and win the microtransat - your work could help set a world record.
- Don’t enjoy feeling like a tiny cog in a big machine? As a very small team, you’ll be given responsibility and control over projects.
- We know how to run rewarding internships: we had 7 interns last year, if you’d like to chat to them about their experience get in touch.
- What other job requires you to spend a summer’s day out at sea on a yacht (see photos in link) testing out new hardware?
Why not to work for us: (it's not all roses, we think it's better to be upfront)
- We all muck in when things don’t go to plan, and as a start-up this happens more often than at other companies. This means you’ll spend some time doing boring jobs such as sanding.
- Caernarfon isn’t for everyone: your work will often require being in the same room as the micro vessel, so remote work isn’t possible. North Wales is stunning, and if you like hiking (literally next to Snowdonia), paddleboarding, rock climbing (trad, sport or bouldering), sailing, it’s great. The town itself is also quite picturesque. However, London is a 3.5hr train away so it’s not ideal if you’re wanting to travel every weekend.
