At the National CBRN Centre based in Coventry, we bring together the emergency services to protect and prepare the UK against the chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threat. It’s a critical function and we’re looking for a suitably experienced and qualified serving Police Sergeant to deliver the Centre’s CBRN training programme to Home Office forces, other organisations and Partner Agencies.
The role
You’ll work as part of the Radiological & Nuclear Inland Detection Capability (RNIDC) team working across three UK wide hub locations, providing a radiation and nuclear detection capability within Policing. The base location for the team is at the National CBRN Centre, Ryton on Dunsmore with two hubs situated in South Wales and North Yorkshire. You’ll support protective security operations at major public events and further support the Protect, Prepare and Pursue elements of the National Contest Strategy.
You’ll supervise a new dedicated Radiation and Nuclear Detection Team developing knowledge, and understanding operational capability supporting the planning and integration of radiation and nuclear detection equipment into the protective security layer of policing for events. Additionally, the team will support the response to any radioactive or nuclear source that is out of regulatory control, either through loss or criminal intent.
You'll have the ability to enhance the team's profile through ongoing learning and technological advances, working closely with partners across the CBRN landscape, primarily the Atomic Weapons Establishment.
Responsibilities
- Progressing the day to day work of the RNIDC, delivering management of staff for operational capability; detection capability user management and feedback; supporting the Home Office procurement processes; creating and developing of Policy and operational guidance; understanding and developing training requirements.
- Working as part of a team to research, develop and deliver national policing policies and processes, supporting the development of Police Radiological & Nuclear inland detection capability.
- Identifying and managing risks and issues.
- Maintaining, developing and enhancing relationships with key stakeholders to ensure operational procedures and processes are cognisant of those other agencies.
- Operationally deploying with radiological and nuclear detection equipment within the Protect and Pursue elements of the National Contest Strategy.
- Working with host forces to deploy radiological and nuclear detection architecture into major public events.
- Developing a good knowledge of radiation and nuclear threats, detection capabilities and to become subject matter experts in the use of this detection equipment.
- Creating bespoke deployment plans for operational activity.
- Be part of Duty Officer cadre for the NCBRNC.
- Successful applicants will be expected to travel to other locations within the UK in line with the capability requirements. The base location for the team is at the National CBRN Centre, Ryton on Dunsmore with two hubs situated in South Wales and North Yorkshire. Whilst the advertised role is to be predominantly based at one of the three locations, there is an expectation that the successful applicant will be able to work from any of the three locations according to operational requirements.
Skills and competencies
Essential
Experience supervising an operational team.
Have previous experience of working within the CBRN sphere. This includes previous Military, Police and other CBRN knowledge but as a minimum you should be a Police CBRN Responder.
To be fully operationally fit for deployment.
Demonstrate technological skills and be comfortable with the use of specialist IT, equipment and supporting software.
Demonstrate a good level of understanding of the CT Network and CBRN infrastructure.
Hold a full UK driving licence.
Desirable
Relevant qualification in a project management environment or relevant work experience deemed to have brought the post-holder to an acceptable level.
Be a current and competent CBRN Tactical Advisor or be prepared to study towards the qualification.
Demonstration of strong operational competence within policing.
Hold a current police Standard / Advanced driving grade or be prepared to work towards achieving these grades.
Be trained and appointed as a Radiation Protection Supervisor.
CBRN Operational Command Trained.
Advanced in the use of MS Office products (Word, PowerPoint & Outlook).
Competent in the use of MS Office products (Project & Excel).
Additional information
- This position is offered as a 2 year secondment to West Midlands Police. To qualify, you must confirm in your application that you have received approval, through the process established by your Chief Officer, for secondment.
Externally seconded officers will work under a Central Service Agreement. The agreement sets out the terms of the secondment and the financial and logistical benefits that this will have in relation to the role. - This role is subject to successful completion of Security Check vetting. Developed Vetting will be required when in post.
You must be a British citizen to work for the Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands (CTP WM). If you hold dual nationality, with the primary nationality British, you may also be considered. For the purposes of safeguarding national security, applicants will be required to hold or acquire the appropriate national security vetting clearances of Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV) in line with Cabinet Office Policy, supported by Section 82(2) to (4) of the Police Reform Act (2002). CTP WM will support preferred candidates through the appropriate vetting process.
