The MBA has owned Research Vessels (RVs) since 1896 and currently operates two RVs; MBA Sepia, a 15.45 m a Category 2 coded workboat and MBA Laminaria, a 5.8m Category 4 coded RIB. Both vessels operate locally out of Plymouth, principally supporting MBA’s research activities. In addition, we are increasingly working with a range of external organisations from research, education, and commercial sectors. Working within the RVs team is an exciting and challenging role and we are looking to appoint a motivated Deckhand to support operations at sea. This is a hands-on physical role and would suit individuals with some previous experience working on boats and a strong interest in a developing a career working at sea. The RVs Deckhand will work under direction of the RVs Skipper, ensuring the safe operation and maintenance of vessels. The role will contribute to; mobilisation and demobilisation of vessel and equipment on survey days, operating deck winches, safe deployment and recovery of a range of scientific sampling equipment (e.g. benthic grabs, plankton tow nets and scientific fishing gear), ensuring the vessel is clean, tidy and ready for travel, supporting the work of scientists and students whilst on board, and ensuring passenger safety. In addition, the RVs Deckhand will undertake a range of maintenance tasks on board the vessel, maintain a clean and tidy working environment as well as contribute to maintaining survey equipment. An interest in mechanical systems and learning how to maintain diesel and petrol outboard engines would be advantageous.
Salary and benefits
- 30 days annual leave plus statutory Bank Holidays (pro-rata)
