Research Technician in Experimental Evolution in Rhizobia

Research Technician in Experimental Evolution in Rhizobia Sheffield, England

University of Sheffield
Full Time Sheffield, England 28762 - 33314 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

The School of Biosciences is seeking a Research Technician to work on experimental evolution of rhizobia - the nitrogen-fixing symbionts of legumes. The 1-year project will investigate evolutionary outcomes of horizontal gene transfer of 'symbiosis plasmids' in the bacteria, Rhizobium leguminosarum. These plasmids carry key genes required by rhizobia for symbiosis with their legume hosts. In this exciting and unique project we will follow in real time as the bacteria adapt to a novel legume host in controlled green house experiments. Working closely with the project leader and collaborators at University of Calgary, Canada, you will:

  • Build novel symbionts through transfer of symbiosis plasmids to new bacterial backgrounds
  • Conduct long-term evolution experiments
  • Assess evolved clones for phenotypic and genetic change.
The ideal candidate will have a good honours degree or equivalent experience, effective communication skills and the ability to manage and creatively trouble shoot laboratory experiments.
Our lab is committed to ensuring we build a genuinely welcoming environment where all members can bring their full selves to the workplace. You will join a vibrant multi-lab team passionate about plant-bacteria interactions working at a specialist plant growth facility. The position will also afford the opportunity to visit with collaborators in Canada.
We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
