SRUC is looking to appoint a Research Technician for a fixed term appointment for 4 years. The post will provide technical support to projects aiming at investigating rumen metabolism and microbiology.
SRUC carries out fundamental and applied research based around gut microbiology. We are interested in understanding and manipulating rumen function to minimise production of undesirable emissions (methane, nitrogen) by ruminant livestock (cattle and sheep) and in understanding the role of gut microbes in the health and welfare of companion animals.
A research technician is required to assist in research projects within the research group. The post will be predominantly based at our King Buildings centre although some work at out site in Dumfries and on partner farms in England and Wales is envisaged. The post holder’s main responsibility will be to assist with the preparation and analysis of samples from on-going experiments.
The main duties and responsibilities of the post will be:
- Assist in the operation of and development of experimental fermenter systems to mimic rumen fermentation.
- Assist in the operation of and development of on farm systems to monitor greenhouse gas production.
- Analysis of fermentation products including the use and maintenance of gas liquid chromatography systems.
- Microbial analysis of fermenter samples by microbiological and molecular based techniques.
- Preparation of solutions, reagents, stock buffers and media for the maintenance and analyses of experimental samples.
- Management, preparation and maintenance of experimental equipment including planning the use of equipment, and co-ordination with other technical/academic staff.
- Record and collate experimental data using Excel and other computer programs as appropriate.
