Job Description
A Research Lab Technician position is available in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology at Virginia Tech University, Blacksburg. The primary purpose of this position is to conduct studies on understanding the biology and pathogenesis of the parasitic agent Toxoplasma gondii. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, research tech will assist with maintaining parasite and bacterial cultures. The selected candidate will work on research projects that would involve basic microbiology and molecular biology techniques including PCR, DNA cloning, running agarose gels, western blots, transfection and microscopy. The position also includes working with lab animals more specifically mouse model. The research tech will also be responsible for preparing laboratory reagents and solutions, wash laboratory glassware, perform sterilizations, maintain laboratory supplies/stocks, ordering, and assisting PI with training of undergraduate and graduate students in lab techniques. This job can serve you as the ideal springboard for pursuing graduate education.

Attend weekly lab or group meetings and present the results of experiments

Managing undergraduate student research assistants
Preparation of crucial lab stocks (media, chemicals, buffers)
Familiarity with basic cell culture techniques, including sterile techniques is a plus
General background knowledge of Toxoplasma parasite biology
Required Qualifications
B.S. or B.A. in Biological Sciences. Final year undergraduates expecting to graduate in May 2023 can also apply.
Preferred Qualifications
Undergraduate research experience in generating plasmid constructs for manipulation of Toxoplasma genome.
