Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Highway Safety Research Center (HSRC), founded by the North Carolina State Legislature in 1965, works to reduce deaths and injuries on North Carolina’s roads and the entire nation. The Center advances these goals across all surface transportation modes through a balanced, interdisciplinary program of research, evaluation, information dissemination, and training. HSRC works with communities and transportation professionals locally, nationally, and worldwide. We are a leader in the field of transportation research, embrace a safe systems approach, and are focused on safety for all.
Position Summary
The University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center has an exciting opportunity for a Research Technician to work remotely for us in the Washington, DC metro area. This researcher will work not only with our home office in Chapel Hill, but also with our project partners at Virginia Tech, especially those on the Arlington, Virginia campus. A main focus of the work will be on studying trail traffic (primarily bicycling and walking) on the regional trails of the DC metro area in collaboration with the National Parks Service and local city, county, and state transportation and parks departments. But this research position will also include working on other national and regional projects. Such projects may range from safety analysis using video data, to text analysis to understand perspectives on safety. Because they are overrepresented in traffic crash and fatalities, much of the research focuses on vulnerable road users (pedestrians, bicyclists, and micromobility device users, such as e-scooter riders).
