We are looking for highly motivated candidate for the role of Research Technician to support the PerkinElmer OneSource Scientific Services within our Biology support team.

The successful candidate will have responsibility for

  • Maintenance of mammalian cell lines for assay

  • Management of specialised cells such as human primary cells and organoids

  • Generate conditioned media specific for use in cell work

  • Use fluorescence microscopy for cell staining/counting

  • Routine QC analysis of cells, staining surface markers for Flow Cytometry analysis

his role will report into the PerkinElmer Biology Manager and will be embedded in the GSK Novel Human Genetics and Complex In-Vitro Models departments on the Stevenage Campus.

Job Responsibilities

  • To grow and maintain mammalian cell lines

  • To grow and maintain specialised cells such as human primary cells or organoids

  • To prepare cells for assay work

  • To maintain a frozen cell supply

  • Preparation of cells for assay

  • To undertake transduction of mammalian cells

  • To generate conditioned media specific for use in cell work

  • To use fluorescence microscopy for cell staining/counting

  • To undertake daily liaison with scientific staff and other team members

  • To include preparation and maintenance of local reagents and stocks for fridges and freezers, with agreed labelling and regular checks for expired materials

  • Comply with all occupational health and safety rules and regulations. Be aware of hazards and recommendations for safety improvements if necessary

  • Operate to approved quality standards (e.g. GLP/GMP) as required

  • Maintain QA systems by keeping accurate records of work undertaken, methods used, and results achieved. Recording experimental results

  • To carry out sterility checks routinely

  • Work independently and flexibly depending on team priorities and to set realistic work schedules to support requirements

  • Perform any other reasonable duties as requested by the line manager

  • Perform routine QC analysis of cells, staining surface markers for analysis by Flow Cytometry and recording the results

  • Assisting in the preparation of assays

Education/Experience/Qualifications:

  • BSc in relevant scientific subject (e.g. cell biology, biochemistry or molecular biology) or equivalent experience, within relevant laboratory experience

  • Robust knowledge of cell culture, cell lines, primary cells and proven aseptic technique

  • Previous experience of media preparation required, cell isolation techniques and molecular biology methods an advantage

  • Ability to follow protocols consistently and to produce accurate records

  • Ability to prioritize and work to deadlines

  • Strong computer and organisational skills

  • Good team-working behaviours, interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to understand customer requirements

  • Able to work on own initiative

  • Aptitude for precision and attention to detail

Physical Demands

The overall physical exertion of this position requires:

  • Sit or stand 2-3 hours in laboratory areas.

  • Reach above/below the shoulder, bend at the knees and waist.

  • Office work activities, including keyboard, with fingers/hands/arms up to 4 hours.

  • Work around moving laboratory equipment and machinery.

  • Work with biohazards such as blood borne pathogens.

  • All work is carried out in a containment level 2 environment.

  • Appropriate PPE must be worn at all times (Lab coat, gloves, eye protection)


Working Environment

  • Must be able to work in a laboratory, controlled environments requiring personal protective equipment.

  • Job pace may be fast and job completion demands may be high.

  • Employee maybe required to manage hazardous wastes in compliance with company procedures & State/Federal/Local hazardous waste regulations. Duties may include: Identifying, handling, generating, accumulating, storing, labelling.

  • Ensure safety, security, and the environment in all aspect of the daily activities, and any potential safety hazards are addressed and corrected immediately.

  • Understand ergonomic relationship between people, equipment and working environment.
