Job description

Job Purpose
To conduct research and manage laboratory operations for laser ablation noble gas thermochronology (e.g., apatite and zircon (U-Th-Sm)/He systems), triple dating of bedrock and sediment samples with noble gas, fission track, and U-Pb dating techniques, and contributing to the management and administration of research group activities. Sustained scholarly output, experience in research grant acquisition, and supporting teaching and student supervision.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To make a leading contribution to the primary research objectives of the Earth System Dynamics group, supporting noble gas thermochronology research projects, and ordering laboratory supplies to deliver optimal outcomes.
2. To work independently on assigned projects, and being accountable for delivering noble gas thermochronology data [field work, sample preparation, sample analysis on a coupled LA-ICPMS and high vacuum line mass spectrometer, confocal microscopy, data reduction, and contributing to manuscripts for publication].
3. To contribute to grant funding applications as a noble gas thermochronology co-investigator, leading on their development from initial contact through to submission, to secure funding which makes a significant contribution to the Institute/College/University.
4. To take responsibility for implementing laboratory chemistry and data analysis procedures, and carrying out the management of laboratory data.
5. To supervise staff, and to plan and manage workloads within projects.
6. To carry out independent research, to develop triple-dating thermochronology techniques.
7. To act as a noble gas thermochronology and geology consultant, including meeting with and presenting results to external collaborators.
8. To contribute at a senior level to external project meetings, conferences, and scientific committees.
9. Where relevant, to deliver teaching courses and contribute to creating associated materials. Act as a co-supervisor for postgraduate research students as required.
10. To manage project timelines, in collaboration with other staff.
11. To be accountable for compliance with relevant Standard Operating Procedures [SOPs] and production of internal documentation.
12. To participate in internal and external audits.
13. To lead in collaborations with internal and external partners, with responsibility for the design and implementation of research projects.
14. To contribute at a senior level to the administrative management of the relevant research area
15. To advise and give direction to staff within other functional areas of the Institute/College/University.
16. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
17. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Qualifications
Essential:
A1 An awarded Doctorate degree in geosciences and extensive prior postdoctoral researcher experience
A2 Demonstrated experience in sample preparation and laboratory techniques for noble gas and fission track thermochronology techniques.
A3 Extensive previous scholarly outputs, such as >10 published scholarly outputs in peer-review journals, including multiple first-author contributions.
A4 Demonstrated experience as the lead investigator in acquiring research grants.
Desirable:
B1 Experience in planning and conducting fieldwork for thermochronology sample collection.
B2.Experience in ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies.
B3 Experience working within a research group setting and contributing to its administration.
Knowledge and Skills
Essential:
C1 Clear skills in high-vacuum line noble gas mass spectrometry and U, Th measurement for thermochronometer age determination, as applied to problems in tectonics and surface processes studies.
C2 Excellent skills in bedrock and sediment thermochronometer data reduction, quality control, and analysis.
C3 Excellent communication skills [oral and written], including public presentations [national and international], and ability to communicate complex and/or large volume data clearly and concisely to a varied audience.
C4 Excellent interpersonal skills, including team work and a collegiate approach.
C5 Appropriate workload and prioritisation skills, including balancing competing demands whilst sustaining quality output.
C6 Significant experience in independent research, structuring own workload, and delivering high-quality outputs within necessary timescales. Significant problem-solving skills, including a creative, flexible, and pragmatic approach
Desirable :
D1 Thermal history and detrital thermochronology modelling skills using HeFty, QtQt, and other statistical or kernel density estimation techniques.
D2 Experience in maintaining inventories of geologic samples and laboratory analyses.
Experience
Essential:
E1 Demonstrable experience in thermochronology data collection (e.g., mass spectrometry operation, microscopy) at the doctorate and postdoctoral researcher level.
E2 Demonstrable experience in planning and conducting fieldwork in remote areas.
E3 Demonstrable experience in collaborative research projects and supporting diverse research group needs.
E4 Demonstrable experience in Geographic Information System software applied to geologic data, handling high volume, and complex data.
E5 Experience in contributing to overall research objectives, acting as a co- or lead investigator, and creating research proposals and planning work.
E6 Experience in publishing research in high-quality, high-impact journals
Desirable:
F1 Fieldwork experience in North and South America, and Europe.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 8, £46,047 - £53,353 per annum pro rata.
This post is full-time (35 hours per week), and open ended.
