SLB Cambridge Research (SCR) is part of SLB’s global network of research and engineering centres. SCR is a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment with state-of-the-art research and computing facilities. We work on applied research projects in the chemical and physical sciences to meet the current and future challenges of the industry.
SLB Cambridge Research is a distinctive marquee-like structure dominating the High Cross site on the western outskirts of Cambridge, England. This spectacular building was completed in 1985 and the smaller second phase was opened in 1992. It has recently been classified as a Grade II listed building. Altogether, there are more than 930 m2 of laboratory space and offices for more than 75 scientists, technicians and domain experts.
Job Summary:
The Research Scientist is responsible for conducting scientific research under general supervision, and for applying expertise to support research projects and recommending scientific approaches and solutions.
The successful candidate will be working initially within a team with fellow research engineers and scientists on projects related to drilling fluid chemistry and rock-fluid interactions. The candidate will be expected to work primarily in a laboratory environment, setting-up and operating customized instruments, experimental design and execution, and reporting results to principal investigators. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for regular tasks related to equipment maintenance, overall lab organization, and lab safety.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
- Work to expand domain expertise and to disseminate knowledge within area of specialization across the company
- Employ standard scientific principles, theories, and concepts
- Make independent decisions on routine issues and methods, and recommend scientific approaches and solutions
- Coordinate and communicate work efforts within the Research and Development organization and with external contacts, as appropriate
- Supervise support staff and interns, and coordinate the technical work of others as required
- Publish scientific papers, apply for patents, and attend conferences
- Write reports and presentations showcasing assessment results and technology evaluations
- Provide inputs to other disciplines during different phases of the projects
Qualifications & Experience:
- Holder of a MSc or PhD degree in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry or related disciplines
- Experience with advanced characterization techniques is ideal
- Strong analytical mindset and an ability to acquire domain knowledge quickly
- Knowledge of surface and colloid chemistry principles, fluid-surface interactions, rheology basics and chemical kinetics
- Industry or research experience related to interfacial processes are preferred
- Background in experimental work with demonstrable experience
