Job purpose
As the Materials characterisation specialist you will ideally have experience in both powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD) and Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) but there is flexibility in this role to accommodate a candidate who specialises in either. Experience in one of these techniques is essential.
This is a dynamic opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging analytical environment and is looking to develop their characterisation expertise and share their own. The role in the Advanced Characterisation department is to provide research-grade analytical capability and expertise to characterise JM materials using state of art laboratory X-ray diffractometers for industrial research. The role also offers potential access to synchrotron facilities, depending on the candidate’s experience
Your responsibilities:
  • Uphold the highest standards of EHS and maintain a good safety culture through compliance to EHS standards, procedures, and rules within the XRD section. To observe, critically review, define, and develop safe systems of work for areas of responsibility and contribute to other areas.
  • Provide the highest standard of powder X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) data analysis and interpretation to the JM science community within expected timelines.
  • Competently operate a suite of laboratory powder XRD instruments and running performance checks.
  • Apply analytical method development acumen to provide fit-for-purpose measurement.
  • Use excellent communication and report writing skills to effectively disseminate data and understanding, when supporting and collaborating with colleagues in local and remote locations.
  • Use a strong background in materials characterisation and the ability to correlate data from multiple techniques to meet a common hypothesis.
Requirements for the role:
  • PhD, MSc, BSc or equivalent experience in analytical chemistry, materials science or related discipline.
  • Be able to apply analytical acumen to data collection and analysis to provide fit-for-purpose data.
  • Small angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) knowledge and experience.
  • Powder X-ray Diffraction (XRD) knowledge and experience
  • Powder X-ray Diffraction (XRD) instrument operation and maintenance.
  • A strong background in materials and structural characterisation.
