About us

The mission of the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health is to improve the health and well-being of children, and the adults they will become, through world-class research, education and public engagement. The UCL GOS ICH, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children’s health research outside North America. GOS ICH’s activities include active engagement with children and families, to ensure that our work is relevant and appropriate to their needs. GOS ICH generates the funding for our research by setting out our proposals in high quality applications to public, charitable and industrial funding bodies and disseminates the results of our research by publication in the medical and scientific literature, to clinicians, policy makers and the wider public. The Institute offers world-class education and training across a wide range of teaching and life learning programmes which address the needs of students and professional groups who are interested in and undertaking work relevant to child health.

About the role

This is a research project and product management role for a digital health systems project. Main duties are as follows: • To provide Research Project Management for the Neotree project (digital health systems project to improve newborn care and survival in low resource settings such as Malawi and Zimbabwe) • To provide product management support providing liaison between the Neotree research and clinical teams and the Neotree tech team. • To support Dr Heys in providing some project management support with other related digital health systems research projects Neotree project Every year one million babies die on their day of birth. Seventy percent of newborn deaths are preventable by implementing low-cost solutions effectively and smartphone and tablet technologies offer an avenue for implementation. We are supporting healthcare workers (HCWs) in delivering these solutions using a tablet-based application (app) to prompt clinical actions, provide education, collect information about babies, and feed data back to HCWs. In 2017, we co-developed an early version of our app (Neotree) with Malawian HCWs, who reported it was easy to use and helped them deliver quality care. In 2019-2022, funded by Wellcome Trust we have completed the development of a pre-release version of Neotree and a pilot implementation evaluation in 3 hospitals, 2 in Zimbabwe and 1 in Malawi. We are currently funded by UK FCDO to adapt the hospital-based version of Neotree for primary health clinics in Malawi until March 2023. From Jan 2023 we will also be funded in part by the NIHR to undertake evaluation of roll out of Neotree to primary health clinics in Zimbabwe (planned as part of the national roll out of their electronic health records), continuation of the Wellcome Trust funded public engagement work in both countries, optimisation of clinical algorithms underpinning the digital clinical decision support tool and development and pilot evaluation of a perinatal version of Neotree. Ongoing implementation in existing sites has been funded through the Neotree charity (www.neotree.org). We have a number of research grants in development to undertake a large-scale evaluation. This post is funded for 1 year in the first instance.
