We are recruiting a Research Laboratory Technician to support the operations of an exciting new rare diseases project. You will be working in a team and conducting molecular experiments on human biological samples whilst maintaining accurate records.

About the job:

The Rare Diseases Phenotyping project is recruiting 1000 patients to participate in ground-breaking research aiming to drive forward diagnosis, gene discovery and mechanistic understanding for patients with rare genetic diseases. The pilot phase is now complete and to increase capacity we require an additional team member.

The role supports the operations of the new and exciting Rare Disease RNA Phenotyping project. As a key member of the team, the Technician's role is to conduct molecular experiments on human biological samples, whilst maintaining accurate records on, for example, sample IDs and the outcomes of sample processing.

The role will require processing time-sensitive human biological samples, using aseptic techniques such as cell isolation and RNA extraction and entering data accurately onto our laboratory records system (LIMS) and other databases.

About you:

Ideally you will have:

  • have practical experience of laboratory technician / biological scientific research work or a similar role
  • work with a high degree of precision and accuracy
  • have excellent organisational and planning skills
  • have good IT skills including knowledge of spreadsheets and LIMS
  • have the flexibility to work late afternoons and early evenings due to sample processing requirements which can fluctuate, and involves regular and adhoc work in evenings. Sometimes this can be later than expected due to circumstances outside our control.

This appointment is full-time, 36.5 hours per week with some occasional paid overtime.

The post is available on a fixed-term basis until 30 November 2024 in the first instance. NIHR BioResource is funded by the National Institute for Health & Care Research (NIHR) on a 5-year funding cycle. It was announced last year that NIHR BioResource will receive new funding over the next 5 years.

Our offices are on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus CB2 0QQ (approximately 2 miles south of the city centre).

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 November 2024 in the first instance.
