The University of Glasgow is inviting applications for three Post-Doctoral Research Policy Associates/Fellows to be at the heart of its new Centre for Public Policy. The Centre for Public Policy is an investment of the College of Social Sciences (home to five schools – the Adam Smith Business School; the School of Education; the School of Law; the School of Social and Political Sciences; and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies). The Centre will support collaboration, creativity and policy engagement across the University, the public, third and private sectors, supporting researchers and policy makers to examine and address the policy challenges of today and the decades to come.
We welcome applications from outstanding early career researchers from across the social sciences, with a strong track record in research that applies to contemporary policy challenges. Postholders will make a substantial contribution to the development and activities of the Centre for Public Policy, building and enhancing the Centre’s reputation for excellence in research, knowledge exchange and impact within the policy communities in the Glasgow, Scotland, the UK and internationally. You will be accountable for planning and delivering your own weekly workload and have responsibility for making day-to-day decisions autonomously and as a team, in consultation with and support from the Director and other senior members of the team. As well as having the opportunity and support to develop your own post-doctoral research, Research Fellows will be expected, individually and collaboratively with colleagues, to develop and deliver new research and knowledge exchange projects that support the Centre’s priorities.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of research individually or jointly in collaboration with the Centre’s team, including independent and joint publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the Centre’s reputation for excellent research, and gathering indicators of esteem.
  • Individually and with colleagues within the Centre, design and deliver a range of knowledge exchange activities and outputs with and for the benefit of policy partners across the UK in the public, private and voluntary sector, to ensure a substantial track record of high-quality policy impact, founded on research expertise, impartiality and integrity.
  • Take a leading role in the development and delivery of new collaborative research projects, including in applications for external research funding, with colleagues in the Centre for Public Policy, the University of Glasgow, wider academic networks and policy partners operating at the level of the UK, devolved and local governments.
  • Take a leading role in the development and running of the University of Glasgow Policy Lab, designed to address policy challenges from multi-level government, multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral perspectives.
  • Actively develop effective networks among academic and professional services colleagues and policy practitioners working within areas of expertise and in line with project priorities
  • Support the development and delivery of the Centre’s programme of Executive Education, professional development and consultancy.
  • Present your research and promote the work of the Centre for Public Policy at international and national conferences, internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops, to develop and enhance our research profile.
  • Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
  • Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together: World Changing Glasgow 2025, (https://www.gla.ac.uk/explore/strategy/ )
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Director of the Centre for Public Policy.
For Appointment at Grade 8 in addition to the listed above
Post holders will have supervisory responsibilities for the day-to-day management of the postdoctoral team, and support the strategic planning of the Centre’s activities.
Qualifications
A.1. Phd (or equivalent), with normally at least one year (grade 7) of post-doctoral experience in academia or the policy community.
For appointment at Grade 8.
A2. Postholders would be expected to have at least three years of post-doctoral research experience in academia or the policy community.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential:
C.1. Growing research profile and track record of policy-relevant published research, commensurate with career stage. Experience of making a leading contribution in academic activities
C.2 Track record of policy engagement, developed through a range of knowledge exchange activities, commensurate with early career stage.
C.3. Demonstrable understanding of the UK policy environment, including its system of multi-level government.
C.4 Excellent communication skills, including demonstrable ability to disseminate conceptual and complex ideas to a wide variety of audiences, including non-academic audiences, to promote understanding, particularly in relation to the key thematic priorities of the College of Social Sciences.
C.5 Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.
C.6 Commitment to represent the Centre for Public Policy in a variety of policy and public environments, including in a range of traditional and social media outlets.
Desirable criteria
D.1 Established track record of successfully securing funding for research and knowledge exchange projects, as appropriate for the subject specialism.
D.2 Experience of innovative teaching or public engagement activities.
D.3 Experience of communicating research via a variety of media outlets.
