This is an immediate opening for a Mechanical Engineer to join our R&D team based out of San Carlos, CA. This is a Full-Time Salaried position.
The Staff Mechanical Engineer will be a key leader in the design & development of complex accessories that work in conjunction with medical robotic systems. Projects include the development of user interface controllers, bronchoscope support modules, fluidics modules, navigation registration systems, and mechanical positioning modules. You will have the opportunity to lead and refine existing products and take new projects from concepts through development and commercial launch, working with a highly talented cross-functional team of Electrical, Software, Optics, Navigation, Manufacturing, and Clinical engineers. You will also lead next-generation product development efforts for multiple subsystems while ensuring the safety, efficacy, and reliability of the products.

Responsibilities:
- Design ownership for capital equipment accessories, and disposable accessories for use in robotic surgical procedures
- Full responsibility and leadership for designing/developing/documenting multiple mechanical products with basic mechanisms, mechanical assemblies and components used in disposable medical devices.
- Lead workstreams for accessories, within the ME team, or cross-functionally
- Identifies and resolves technical issues to ensure the feasibility and sustainability of mechanical designs. Contributes to the design for manufacturing analysis
- Full responsibility for product development documentation including SolidWorks CAD models, drawings, development of specifications, test methods and protocols to ensure the functionality, safety and efficacy of these medical devices in accordance with medical device regulations.
- Perform failure analysis and root cause investigations in collaboration with quality teams to derive corrective/preventive actions
- Attend and support clinical cases while representing the R&D functions.
- Collaborate closely with clinical and marketing teams to quantify and capture product requirements
- Collaborate with other engineering disciplines (software, electrical, systems, manufacturing) on the design of capital and disposable accessories and subsystems
- Work with industrial design to refine components and subsystems for commercial use
- Responsible for executing verification and validation testing while generating associated protocols and reports
- Prepare and lead technical design reviews of responsible accessories, presenting design inputs, design outputs and open issues for each product development stage.
- Generate and document novel ideas that strengthen the company’s IP position in the fields of surgical robotics and minimally invasive surgery.
- Work collaboratively and efficiently in a fast-paced start-up environment with minimal supervision and guidance.
- Experience with reliability testing and test method development preferred.
- User-centered design that focuses on ease of use, intuitive functionality, and reliable performance.
- Design and develop automated testing devices and fixtures to conduct functional and reliability tests on robotic subsystems
- Perform rapid prototyping and design iterations to validate concepts
- Perform dFMEA and Hazard analysis to derisk design concepts
- Use Design For Manufacturability, Assembly, and Service-ability principles to reduce the cost, simplify assembly and service-ability
- Work within the design control process, and with the document control team to release drawings, assemblies, specifications, test cases, test reports, and engineering studies to our quality system
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or other related discipline) or an advanced degree with required years of directly related experience (B.S. +7 yrs.; M.S.+5 yrs.; PhD+2 yrs.)
- 6-12 years of experience with the design of complex mechanical systems of which at least 5 years of experience is in designing/developing medical devices
- Able to independently assess complex problems and situations to move projects forward
- Experience with relevant materials, and precision machining processes
- Skilled in GD&T and other related ASME/ISO drafting standards
- Advanced SolidWorks user with at least 5 years of experience
- Experience with electromechanical design
- Familiarity with master modeling or top-down modeling techniques
- Experience with product development in a medical device engineering environment (or other regulated industry) is preferred.
- Experience with design for manufacturing, design for reliability, and assembly
- Experience transferring designs to manufacturing including detailed drawing and assembly instructions
- Demonstrated ability to work in cross-functional research and development teams
- Experience with verification and validation of medical devices and complex mechanical systems
- Demonstrated ability to generate original ideas with a history of relevant patents and IP
- Understanding and experience leading Risk analysis documentation including dFMEA ownership
- General understanding of medical device development process and design control
- Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and negotiation skills; friendly and approachable.
- Strong team player with a demonstrated history of success working in a multi-disciplinary, cross-functional environment
- Ability to travel 10% of the time
