Who are DS Smith?
DS Smith is a leading provider of sustainable packaging solutions, paper products and recycling services worldwide. Over the past 80 years our organisation has grown dramatically, as have our services and areas of expertise.
Why Research & Development?
We’re about Revolution not Evolution! We want to find the art the possible and it begins here in Research & Development where we take a simple material such as paper or cardboard, and determine where we maximise its potential, overcoming barriers to meet our Circular Economy led sustainability strategy, whilst exceeding customer expectations in delivering advanced and functional products. All the while finding ways where we can reduce waste, optimise our machine and operations and continue develop our products for the future.
So how do we do this?
Our Next Generation Technology Team works on new production technologies and industry 4.0 solutions that will transform the business. Together with our digital technology groups and our strategic partners, the NGT team builds data pipelines and develops AI tools targeted to improve our end-to-end processes and the efficiency of our products. You’ll research other industries to learn best practices, collate data and run simulations to ensure that we are maximising every meaningful opportunity.
Our Surface and Barriers team then use the information provided by Data & Analytics to create the functionality to paper and board, overcoming barriers and determining ways we can improve, adapt and strengthen our product.
Our Packaging Solutions team work with our consumers to provide solutions for their requirements, providing technical bricks, convert new technology and materials and bring concepts which can then be converted into practical solutions for our customers. One of the key area is around connected packaging for smart supply chain (service-led innovation). From Library research, tech scoutingand lab testing to trialling new products, you’ll be part of our innovation to ensuring DS Smith provides the best products to our client base.
