Job description
The Sheffield Methods Institute (SMI) is seeking a new research member of staff. You will join a dynamic community of interdisciplinary academics engaged in cutting-edge research and teaching in social science methods, applied within different disciplines and across disciplinary boundaries.
We are seeking a three-year fixed-term Research Associate in Quantitative Social Sciences. This is a full-time post, 1.0FTE. The postholder will work with Dr Andrew Bell on an ESRC-funded project entitled ‘Refining and embedding the Intersectional MAIHDA approach to intersectionality in quantitative social science research’. The Multilevel Analysis of Individual Heterogeneity and Discriminatory Accuracy (MAIHDA) model is an innovative multilevel model that aims to uncover intersectional inequalities in society. This grant aims to (1) extend this method for use with longitudinal and geographical data, policy analysis and different outcome variables, whilst evaluating these extensions using simulation studies (2) apply the method to subject areas including health inequalities, education and other interdisciplinary topics, and (3) embed the method throughout the social sciences and beyond, through the development of training courses and materials.
As such, this role will incorporate various research activities: refining and evaluating the ‘MAIHDA’ multilevel modelling approach, ideally through simulation studies, and applying the method to a range of subject areas, including health inequalities and policy evaluation, using large datasets. This will result in a series of both methodological and substantive journal articles and other outputs, that you would often lead on, in collaboration with the investigators. You will also have responsibility for key aspects of project administration (including data applications and management), contribute to managing stakeholder relationships, and planning and delivering dissemination and impact activities. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in the development and delivery of training courses and learning materials in the use of MAIHDA and its extensions, for both academic and non-academic audiences.
You will have a PhD (or equivalent experience), an excellent track record of conducting advanced quantitative research, and a commitment and enthusiasm for working on quantitative intersectional analysis, in health inequalities and other social science subjects.
You will report directly to Dr Andrew Bell, and also work closely with the other grant Co-investigators: Dr Dan Holman (UoS, Dept of Sociology), Dr Clare Evans (University of Oregon), Dr Will Johnson (Loughborough University) and Prof George Leckie (University of Bristol). There will also be opportunities for collaboration with other Departments and Research Centres in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Sheffield and beyond, including the ESRC Centre for Care, the Healthy Lifespan Institute (HELSI), and the Centre for Multilevel Modelling.
The SMI’s research programmes primarily focus on inequality and poverty, social justice and inclusion, social mobility, migration, as well as on methods and methodology. Currently, our disciplinary specialisms include political science, economics, sociology, geography, and education.
We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK.
