An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Department of Life Sciences as a Research Associate.

The role will involve using brain slice electrophysiology to investigate interactions between benzodiazepines and opioid drugs in respiratory neurons.

About the project:

Epidemiological evidence suggests that taking benzodiazepine drugs increases the risk of opioid overdose. This transdisciplinary MRC-funded project aims to understand the mechanisms responsible. We will investigate this at a receptor/neuronal level.

By using brain slice electrophysiological techniques coupled with transgenic mice/fluorescent reporters, we will investigate how benzodiazepine drugs affect mu-opioid receptor signalling. This project is a collaboration with colleagues in the University of Bristol, performing complementary whole-animal and human research.

You must have (or be about to be awarded) a PhD in a relevant discipline (eg. Neuroscience, Pharmacology) with some experience in electrophysiological techniques.

This position is part of a translational research programme, giving you the opportunity to work alongside, and interact with, whole-animal and clinical researchers.

Further information:

This is a fixed-term position for a period of up to 2 years.
