Job description

Applications are encouraged for a Research Associate position in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. The post is funded by the EPSRC-SFC scheme entitled “REducing Greenhouse gas emissions and ENgaging antibactErial Resistance in Anaerobic Treated Effluents (REGENERATE).” Led by Dr Po-Heng (Henry) Lee, REGENERATE is a joint project with Prof. Xinmin Zhan in the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG).

This project is to develop a new oxygen supply level and method of building zero carbon-emission wastewater treatment facilities which reduce both the production of greenhouse gasses and the antibiotic residues entering the water environment. The objectives of the project are:

  • to optimise and understand the oxygen level and supply approach of the anammox-based process for TN removal, N2O emission reduction, pharmaceuticals degradation and antibiotic residues at a lab-scale and industrial-scale using meta-omics techniques;
  • to perform the life cycle assessment, evaluate in-situ applications, the implication to the net GHG zero and antibiotic resistance plan.

Duties and responsibilities

You will undertake project management and supervise multi-disciplinary teams. You will also be encouraged to submit publications to refereed journals and to attract external research funding.

Essential requirements

  • PhD in Environmental Engineering or a closely related field or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience,

  • Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals,

  • Experience in lab- or pilot-scale reactor design, set-up, and operation, preferably knowing the anammox-based process in these systems.
