This is an exciting opportunity within the School of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering for a research assistant position in the area of experimental and computational studies of biomass production under controlled environment. As a part of this, we want to make you feel valued, so we reward our staff with a generous salary, Annual Leave PLUS Bank Holidays package, industry leading pension with salary sacrifice benefits & rewards and a student discount scheme.

About the role

In this role, the research assistant will support the delivery of a multi-million large-scale demonstration project, which is run at the University of Surrey in collaboration with several industrial and academic partners. You will assist the design and execution of experiments in a greenhouse, to collect data for predicting biomass growth under different environment parameters. You will develop computational models and machine learning methods to analyse the experimental data and collaborate with the wider project consortium to contribute to other ad hoc experiments as required by the project. You will write technical report and papers to assist dissemination of research outcomes.

About you

The ideal candidates should hold a good Bachelor and/or Master degree in a related engineering discipline, with significant experiences in controlled environment agriculture and related experimental methods, a strong numerical background with good computer programming, modelling and data analysis skills, and desirably knowledge of energy consumption issues and plant biology in controlled environment agriculture. The successful candidate will have the ability to critically analyse existing data and own results, and have strong communication skills to be able to work in a consortium.

By joining a multidisciplinary team, you will receive unique training opportunities. In addition to conducting novel research that is likely to lead to impactful outputs and tangible innovations, you will be mentored by the line manager to develop your own professional development plan, to identify training needs (e.g., communication & people skills, leadership & management, etc.), and to prepare for your next stage of career.
