Job description
Are you interested in working as part of a large collaborative team that will employ an innovative multidisciplinary strategy to dissect the molecular mechanisms of ribosome specialisation?
A Research Assistant position is available in the research group of Dr Emma Thomson at the University of Sheffield. The Research Assistant will be part of a large collaborative team from the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds and Nottingham, funded by a BBSRC Strategic Longer and Larger grant (sLoLa). This project aims to unravel how compositionally distinct ribosomes enable translation of specific mRNAs across different eukaryotic model systems that cover >1 billion years of evolution. Overall, we aim to understand the detailed molecular mechanisms of ribosome specialisation and determine common features across eukaryotes. As a Research Assistant you will carry out experiments both independently and as part of a team using a broad range of experimental approaches including mammalian cell culture, genome engineering and affinity purification of specialised ribosomes. You will also play a key role in supporting the daily operations and organisation of the lab.
You should have a good honours degree or equivalent experience, excellent communication skills and an ability to work in a team. Scientific experience in the following areas is also essential: Preparing lab solutions; Using scientific equipment; Data analysis using software and managing and organising laboratory resources and data.
